RML Circuit Bent Mutron III w/ 6 Step Knight Rider Sequencer

Post by robml » Fri Nov 08, 2013 7:47 am

hey guys- was wondering what you thought of this for entry into the moogfest circuit bending comp.

are you allowed to take parts of a schematic from a circuit and recreate it or do you need to have a physical existing unit to mod?

there are so many requirements to entry, i dont want to waste my time complying with them all to be told im not using an existing device ;)

I have not created a video like other people documenting the process, just the end result ;)

i took the filter out of the mutron III and ditched the volume detection and replaced it with a 6 step sequenced circuit (think knight rider dash display) designed with a 555 timer.

i also modded the resonance on the mutron III filter, pushing it so it sounds sweet (read: bleeps and tweets)

heres a demo of it hooked up to the minitaur.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6lt9qznHx0

the right box is the modded mutton III filter, the left box is the 6 step sequencer which affects the frequency of the filter sweep at 6 different points.

the knobs on the filter are LP/HP/BP - Filter Center Frequency - Resonance
the knobs on the sequencer are the 6 filter strength knobs and a speed knob

the back and forth swing of the sequencer gives it a natural feel unlike step sequencers that simply restart.

let me know what you think, worth entering into the moogfest circuit bending comp ? ;)

would be cool for an Octave One kind of setup for live performance.

cheers

I would comply with the rules.

you said you didn't make a video, but make sure you document the build step by step or it won't comply. I think you are already outside of the rules because it clearly states you must start with an EXISTING device. NOT building it from a schematic.

i will make a proper video, if i get told it's ok for entry.

i am starting with an existing device, in the sense that im not starting with a new design.

no one is going to actually modify their existing Mutron III. have you seen the asking prices on ebay ;) besides if i create the boards from scratch everyone else can make one too ;)

i've sent an email to the guys at moogfest. we'll see what they say.

cheers ;)

you're right that no on would mod a mutron iii for this... but that's the point. YOU chose the Mutron. THEY want you to do it with something cheap. That's why they put the $70 limit on it. and it doesn't say existing design. it says existing device. Let us know what they say, but I think the fact that you have a question, and are trying to make your design fit are evidence that you know it doesn't really. If you have to explain, then it doesn't.

well moogfest they got back to me

they said i needed to "utilize a pre existing physical product" (paraphrase)

which kind of sucks.

for me "circuit bending" does not necessarily mean "physical device bending". imo i bent the circuit of an existing device and created a new instrument out of it.

disappointing. oh well.

good luck with your speak and spell entries. ;)

cheers

yep. i could have done a kit for $25. i did mine for free using scraps on my work bench.

yep - the mutron III is an existing device. yep - i bent it's circuit.

if i do it in the box it complies. if i do it on vero it doesnt comply. seems like a thin line to walk and not in the spirit of bob moog.

thanks for setting me straight guy.
