Using Subphatty Virtual instrument vst in Ableton Live 9

Post by Thomas Greco » Sun Oct 20, 2013 12:29 pm

Can anyone give me and idea of the best way to record audio/midi in Live with the Sub Phattys VI vst in Live> thx! :? I'm wondering how to set up the VI vst in Live and what kind of tracks to use? Audio track?miditrack? External instrument track? A combo of some or all? Thx in advance!

Anyone? As of now recording audio is fine but the editor wont save preferences so its useless, the subphatty will controll other instruments nicely though lol.

When I open an audio track and play the SubPhatty and place an editor on the audio track shouldn't it controll knobs ect? Am I doing something wrong?

the VI version of the plugin is only for use with the legacy version of logic (9).

use the normal version and it should work fine.

Hi,

this is how I use the Sub with Ableton:

1st: Connect the Sub with Midi Cables to some MIDI Interface. I hope you have one, if not, they are cheap. ;)
2nd: Add an external Instrument to a track and change the Midi Out to the Interface / Sub and the Audio in to wherever the audio goes in.
3rd: Connect the Sub with USB, uncheck (!! important) the USB Midi ("Moog Sub Phatty") as Midi IO's in Ableton so they don't block each oter
4th: Add the VST PlugIn (not VI but Effect) to the track.

This is somehow ugly because you alway can only have 1 track in ableton which works like intended. The other ones can also send notes with the external affect but you can not run multiple instances of the PlugIn so you cant automaticly load the preset of the Sub. :(

@ Moog, are you planning to change this behavior so you can run multiple instances of the plugin ? I know, it is actually Windows fault but maybe you can work around this in some way. :)

its actually not just ableton. its any program running on microsoft windows. microsoft has written their code so only one process (running software) can use a USB device at once.

although the sub editor loads and looks like an plugin, it operates the same way as the standalone editor in your DAW. so you have two processes that want to use the USB device "SUB PHATTY"
1. The DAW to send MIDI (Ableton Live in this case)
2. The Sub Phatty Editor (that has been loaded by your DAW)

so what is the workaround?

the sub phatty has TWO MIDI devices in it.
1. The USB device
2. The DIN device (old school midi in/out)

which is why when running ableton live on microsoft windows you need to
1. set your EXTERNAL INSTRUMENT "Midi to" to the MIDI IN of your device that the sub phatty MIDI DIN OUT is connected to (most likely your soundcards MIDI DIN IN)
2. set the "Midi In" (Sub Phatty Editor > Prefs > Editor Settings) to "Moog Sub Phatty"

on a mac many processes (running software) can use the same USB device at the same time. ie, Ableton Live (or any DAW) AND the Sub Phatty Editor can use the USB Midi device "Moog Sub Phatty" at the same time.

is there any way it could be fixed?

im not sure how the software editor talks to the sub phatty. i have not looked into it closely. im guessing sysex but i could be wrong. in any case ableton live doesnt support sysex. sysex is kind of a packaged up version of midi commands. if i am right, it would be possible to ditch sysex and make the whole communication standard midi, then your DAW would be able to communicate everything via just the one USB connection. i doubt that's going to happen, so do yourself a favour and buy a mac ;)

cheers.

I can's see how it would be a problem to have the DAW (in my case Live 9) send MIDI to the VST (like with any other VST.). And have the VST editor relay the MIDI to and from the Sub Phatty using sysex or whatever? Making the VST the only user of the USB midi interface of the Sub Phatty. I mean, we dont really need the Sub Phatty hardware to communicate with anything but the VST do we? And if for some reason you do need the midi CC from the Sub Phatty also, then you could connect a DIN cable to your interface?

I have been testing a bit and it kinda works if I turn off all Sub Phatty MIDIports in Live and just pop the x64 Sub Phatty Editor (effect version) in to an empty miditrack. Then just route the audio in to the same track by adding an "external audio effect" plugin after the Phatty Editor using only the input of that device. This works for a while but then suddenly the Sub Phatty freezes with a note on. And the only way to turn it of is by turning off and on the hardware unit, which in turn results in the Sub Phatty showing as "disconnected" in the VST untill i restart the computer. (Might be enough just killing the Sub Phatty MidiPortHandler, havent tested.)

Is there a document somewhere showing how it is meant to be used? I cant imagine I am supposed to have to do the above suggested routing?
