MoogerFooger Drive CV control mod?
MoogerFooger Drive CV control mod?
Anyone know of a possibility of modifying any of the Moogerfoogers to have a cv input to control the Drive? I'll probably end up getting a Minifooger or two, but having control of Drive on maybe the Filter MF-101 would be pretty interesting.
Re: MoogerFooger Drive CV control mod?
For $140 (about the price of most factory mods with shipping) you could get an MF boost and achieve the same result. Best part is that you can move it in your chain!
Vibration emanates from all things, even nothing. Using awareness to translate vibration into "music" is something that I am whole heartedly grateful for.

One word: Vactrol
Voltage in illuminates LED which is tightly coupled to a light dependent resistor, you'll just need to provide 5V to Ring of a TRS jack, and a few passive components later you can provide the full range of resistance to match that of the drive pot.
Having said this, I'm not sufficiently skilled to provide you with a schematic but for < $20 of parts and some know-how (don't forget the elbow grease), and you are there.
Or just buy a Drive, it's really nice, but of course, the exp pedal is bound to filter sweep... Boost? Dunno... Seems mild and if all you need is exp actuated drive, a full DIY solution may be the ticket.

No doubt the vactrol would be the bending way & cheaper.
The boost would offer an on / off ability to generate a hotter signal into the 101, pushing the drive into red fun territory. Along with the boosted signal, you could roll back the highs or push them forward to assist the filters effect. Then you could just click off the boost and go back to a "clean" signal.
If you put a drive pedal in front, you will loose some of the dynamic range to the natural compression that occurs with a drive circuit. It may also result in the desired effect. However the filter built into the MF Drive may make for some fun textures too.
In either case, you could use the env out to control volume on the boost, or filter sweep on the drive.

Yeah, might make more sense to get one of the Minifoogers. I'm mostly curious if anyone has done it and if they found it to be useful.
From the demos I've seen, it seems like the overdriviness of turning up drive on the Moogerfoogers would be closer to the Drive Minifooger and similar to an overdrive pedal type effect, not the Boost Minifooger. The Boost pedal seems to be more nonintrusive, in that it doesn't seem to change the sound character very much.

Re: MoogerFooger Drive CV control mod?
The boost is subtle. It's a utility pedal that you can use to send things that follow it into a higher gain - like amps and other foogers.
The drive of each fooger has a distinct tone and layers well. I use a paraEQ that boosts selsected frequencies & the whole sound. It works & sends the 101 into a high overdrive sound. It's useful, but not my go to sound. It's no drive pedal in other words, very generic sounding - warm. It's very useful with an EQ after it, to shape your sound.
Driving the MuRF is really useful, except that you take a $500+ awesome effect and turn it into a drive pedal with an 8 band EQ.

Re: MoogerFooger Drive CV control mod?
I actually completely dislike the MuRF effect and only use mine as an 8 band eq. Still trying to decide if I should get rid of it, but sometimes an eq is pretty useful.
Re: MoogerFooger Drive CV control mod?
It is a love it or hate it effect. Sell it & get a dedicated EQ.
The MXR 10 band and Empress paraEQ are great. I use the empress up front and the 10 band in the amp fx loop. Every musician playing through electronics should have an EQ, and know how to use it.
There's your solution... The minifooger boost is a limited EQ & drive CV solution. The new paeaEQ has a separate EQ & boost foot toggle, would also satisfy your desire.
