First timer need help setting up in logic (Sub Phatty)

Post by memhpis1212 » Sat Aug 24, 2013 9:38 pm

Hi, this is my first analog synth and I literally have no idea how to set this up in logic pro x. I have a usb going into my computer from the phatty and would like to know the best way to set it up in logic. Would really appreciate the help. Thanks.

An easy way to set it up, add an External Instrument plugin, in the Instrument slot on a channel strip. Select Mono, then select Sub Phatty as a destination, ,the MIDI Channels and Input. Done!

It depends on what you want to do. Question 1: what do you want to do exactly? Play the synth and record the sound? Record MIDI events and play them back through the synth? Process the sound from a virtual synth through the Sub Phatty? Something else? If you want to record the audio as it comes from the Sub Phatty the setup mentioned above won't work. In that case you'll need to connect an audio jack cable from your synthesizer to your audio interface.

Thanks for the replies. At this point breun, I'd really just like to be able play the synth in logic and record it via midi if possible. In the long run, yes, I would like to be able to send virtual instruments through the Sub Phatty so I guess I might as well have a setup to allow me to do so. As I stated I only have a usb connected from the phatty to the computer at this point, do I need more? I tried your instructions madeinfoam (thank you) but I'm not getting any sound or anything. I set up and external instrument in mono on the channel strip. I select the Midi Destination as the Sub Phatty, I've selected each midi channel, and each input available and can't get anything. Am I missing something. Hope to get some more help. Thanks for the help so far.

If you only want to record MIDI events, then the USB cable should be enough. You'll need to play the MIDI back via the synth to hear the original performance you recorded. (But of course you can also play back the MIDI using any other MIDI devices, physical or virtual.)

Am I doing something wrong? I have the usb connected from the phatty to the computer. I create a external midi instrument track in mono and set the output to the sub phatty and the midi channel on 1 and I'm getting nothing other than midi data. Is it something obvious that i'm missing here?

Yes, I think: you need to connect an AUDIO cable from the main OUT of the Sub to your interface. Then add an audio track in Logic for that channel. USB on the Sub is MIDI only, it does not carry audio. Hope that helps.

It seems that breun read your post to mean that you only wanted to record MIDI from the Sub. As I read through these, I had that impression too!
