Problem with SubPhatty activate panel

Post by GLN82 » Sat Jul 27, 2013 10:31 am

When activate panel is on and I switch to a preset, when I switch back to activate panel the sound i had on the panel has completely changed.
Anyone else got this problem?

Unless I'm not understanding you -- which is possible -- your Sub Phatty is working exactly as it's designed to:
  • Switch to a preset = set all parameters to their stored state, regardless of where the physical dials are set
  • Activate panel = set all parameters to wherever the dials are physically set to, overriding any presets
It sounds like you want to tweak a preset. In that case, just select the preset and tweak the dials; you don't need to activate panel.

Let me try to explain it more clearly:

When I make a sound in activate panel mode and i switch to a preset I hear the preset instead of the sound I just made on the panel. this is normal. when i switch back to activate panel the sound i've just made on the panel has changed. so switching between panel and preset changes the sound of the panel..

There's another thing to know about Activate Panel.

Beyond the controls on the panel there are another 50 or so parameters associated with every preset, which affect the sound.

For this reason, "Activate Panel" actually saves its own set of "under the hood" parameters, so in essence it's like its own special preset.

The reason for this is simple: it's so that you can switch from Active Panel to any preset and then switch back to Active Panel, and have Active Panel sound the same way both times. Provided you didn't move the panel knobs, of course.

Otherwise, any time you went to Active Panel, it would keep the other 50-odd parameters the same as whatever was the last preset you'd loaded... so if you went from Active Panel to preset 1 and back to Active Panel, then Active Panel would sound one way... but if you then loaded Preset 2 and switched back to Active Panel, then Active Panel would sound totally different than it did the first time.

The first time, you would get all the hidden settings of Preset 1, plus the physical knob settings on the panel; the second time you'd get all the hidden settings of Preset 2 plus the physical knob settings on the panel.

In testing, I found this to be less musically useful than just treating Active Panel mode as a special preset buffer with its own persistent hidden settings, which were the same each time I loaded it.

Now all that being said, the initial firmware that shipped with the Sub Phatty was not quite as developed, and I think it behaved in the way I said I didn't like -- where Active Panel would inherit some of the hidden settings from whatever was the last preset you'd used prior to turning on Active Panel. This has been fixed for the last several beta firmware versions, and will be fixed in the next official firmware release which is coming literally any day now, as soon as the manual for the Editor software is finished.

I hope this helps; if you need more details or explanation about any of this stuff just ask.

Cheers,

Amos

Thank you Amos for your quick reply.

This is exactly what is was trying to explain, when I switch from panel to preset and back to panel the panel sound has changed. This can be very frustrating, especially when you created a sound that you really liked and than it's gone because you switched to a preset..

So if I understand correctly I have an old firmware. where can I get the new one?

Thank you, Amos, for that thorough explanation.

GLN82, I'm really glad this worked! I know how frustrating such things can be, and I'm sorry I didn't understand your original problem.
