USB Connectivity Issue Sub Phatty to Mac

Post by 820s » Tue Jun 11, 2013 5:02 am

Hi,

Using the Sub Phatty with Ableton I set up the external instrument and when I go the set the Midi To and From there is an inconsistency with th Sub Phatty being listed. Some times it is and mostly it is not. I restart computer, change cable and connect direct into iMac rather than the powered hub, which incidently it has connected with in the past so seems not to be the problem. I have been onto Ableton though they could not solve.

It's no good to me if I want to use it as I'm forver resarting and trying to work out why there is no connecting. Completely sabotages my work flow. What is really strange is that in MIdi devices on Mac there is no recognition of Sub P either.

Anyone know what may be my issue?

I got a new iMac running Mountain Lion, and I have also been experiencing problems with USB connections. Not all the time, but sometimes. Most of the time I keep Komplete Audio 6 and an Oplab connected, sometimes a USB hub and/or an external hard drive. Sometimes the KA6 or the Oplab don't show up. I usually find out with Ableton Live 9, but it doesn't seem to be Live's fault. It's just the iMac not 'waking up' the USB's, that's my guess. In those cases, I need to unplug the USB cable and plug it again. Then it is recognised, and works without problems. (The first times, I tried closing Live and opening it again, restarting the computer… and the USB in question still didn't work, until I unplugged it and plugged it again).

So far I have had no issues with the Sub Phatty connected directly to the iMac. To my surprise, it even works perfectly well with the Oplab, in a USB Host, with a OP-1 connected in the other USB Host. I haven't tried the Sub Phatty to actually control Live, but within Live, it works without problems, controlling VST's and Audio Units. (In fact, I didn't even had to set it up in the MIDI preferences… It just worked, out of the box. I'll check my settings tonight).

I'm under the impression that is an issue with the new iMac/Mountain Lion, but good luck getting Apple to recognise the problem and fixing it any time soon.

When it isn't listed as Sub Phatty for me, it is listed as USB MIDI Device (something like that, I forget the exact wording). I'm connected via a hub, I might try connecting directly - I use an iMac as well.

Never use a hub if you can avoid it.

Hmm...I'm running OS X Lion 10.7.5 The disconnect and reconnect USB seems to be the best option. I will test it tomorrow. I have contacted moog directly and given them a detailed run down of operating system, Ableton version etc. They had notified me that the issue is being looked into. So when they get back to me I will post the outcome.

Thanks all for the response. I did try other cables. I even tried it on another mac. Same!

FWIW I use Ableton 9, Mac OS 10.7.5 with my Slim and I have zero issues. Make sure your Sub is always powered up and connected before you open Live.

It may be a Sub issue or you are just doing something wrong. Good luck.
