Moog MF-103
Moog MF-103
Just signing in to say this is the best phaser I've ever heard.
Bonus is making mono synths stereo (yes ok there is the effect, but its so liquid and barely noticeable at subtle values) and that sweeeeeeet overdrive.
LFO going well into the audio range makes some great phaser FM madness.
I was reluctant to it since the LFO does not sync to MIDI, it would have been a huge "+" if it did and was thinking about getting a MIDI Murf.
So glad I got the MF-103 in the end.
Here's a pic of my new favorite FX pedal.

Re: Moog MF-103
congratulations! that is an amazing threesome there. using the 103 as a pseudo bi-phase gets some amazing results as well. (102 LFO OUT -> 103 SWEEP IN (not Sweep) then AUX OUT -> Left Channel and AUDIO OUT -> Right Channel (or the other way around) then set the 102 and 103 lfos at different speeds and bath in the psychedelic wounder

Re: Moog MF-103
I've never owned any other analog phasers but I agree that the 103 sounds amazing, it's gotta be one of the best modern phasers available. I never messed with the CV controls until recently getting a cp-251, now it's like a whole new pedal, getting fresh sounds out of it and I'm still only scratching the surface of the possiblities.
I can't figure out how to sync the LFO of the phaser with the LFO of the cp-251 yet though, is it possible? Anyone have any patching tips?

Re: Moog MF-103
Interesting question... I will try that later this week... but right off the bat, here's a suggestion that should work.
Expression pedal to a white ring jack of the mixer section
From mixer out to attenuator in (optional)
From attenuator out to mult
Patch one cable from Mult to pedal in of the CP-251 LFO
Another from mult to rate jack of the MF-103
Start with LFO knobs at the 12 oclock position (i think).
With a little bit of tweaking, you should be able to achieve synchronicity (nice word)

Re: Moog MF-103
The expression pedal in this set-up controls 3 LFO's (CP-251,MF-103, MF-104) through the mixer-attenuator-mult, very close to synchronicity. While the output from the mult is the same, each LFO has a slightly different range (MF-103 dual range) so each LFO knob has to be adjusted by eyesight (for now).
MF-103M
I love my MF-103. I think it's just about the best phaser I've ever heard. THe ability to use various waverforms in the sweep in jack makes it quite versatile flexible and uber psychedelic.
I use it on everything I do if I can in some way or another. Also the fact that the rate can be pushed to make the pedal into a quasi ring modulator is awesome.
If they made a MF-103M, then we could have tap temp, and the perhaps two rotary waveform switchers for each grouping of stages and maybe an option to switch it to three groupings of four stages, and insert an extra custom waveform in the sweep in.
Then it would ultimately crush the Mu-tron Bi-phaser.

Re: Moog MF-103
Not so easy to sync LFOs without a reset input, right?
Why not mult. out the CP-251 LFO and patch to SWEEP on the MF-103? You then have two other copies of the same LFO to use.

Re: Moog MF-103
That only worked for the SWEEP input. (MF-102) LFO OUT>MF-103 SWEEP IN had not effect.ColorForm2113 wrote:congratulations! that is an amazing threesome there. using the 103 as a pseudo bi-phase gets some amazing results as well. Make sure you're in 12-stage mode.nectarios wrote:That only worked for the SWEEP input. Re: Moog MF-103
Yes, the 103 is my favourite phaser too... I've been through a few, and it has seen them all off.
The only thing I miss on it is the ability to invert the modulation - which would be handy for stereo use.
I recently compared the 103 to the old Small Stone, and though I thought I'd never sell the SS, as it was *perfect* for a specific sound or two, I found that putting a bit of EQ before the 103 made it very hard to tell them apart. The main difference then was the shape of the sweep, but an external LFO should solve that.

I hope they put out a new 103 with midi and a shape selector on the lfo. Until they do (might) I'm thinking I will remain unfazed.

Re: Moog MF-103
Hmm... I bought the Moog 103 in order to see if it could replace my SubDecay Quasar DLX.
I kept both.
I kept both.

Hmmmm. Very different bits of kit. Like the way the Quasar sounds though.stiiiiiiive wrote:Hmm... I bought the Moog 103 in order to see if it could replace my SubDecay Quasar DLX.
