How often do you calibrate your phatty?
I have a LP first stage edition. Few days ago it was terribly out of tune and I started the calibration of OSC1 and OSC2. It went trough about 2 hours and was in tune again. Last calibration was end of last year, the LP never left the room. I only saved/loaded presets via MIDI. How can it get out of tune from one day to the other? Is the storage of the tuning look-up table somehow sensitive to sysex communication?

I've done it once since I've bought it last year (june 2012). It stays in tune quite well... I live in a very hot country and tuning is not a problem for me.

Re: How often do you calibrate your phatty?
I bought mine in june 2011 and ran the calibration routine two weeks ago, just before I left it to a friend so that he can record. I then realized it needed to be done since, say, 3-4 months. Nothing critical though.
In between, I think I did it once, just to try. So let's say I've been doing this once a year. But I LOVE when oscillators are not 100% tuned to each other so take this for what it's worth

Do you check it with a tuner first? If so, how out of tune did you observe it to be?

Re: How often do you calibrate your phatty?
I did not measure it, because it was so obvious. The first time was the worst, because no preset was working anymore and every key over the full range (transpose fully up and down) had the same detuned sound. Before giving up I started calibration, which needed around 4 hours and not only two. This week from on day to the other I noticed that one newly created patch sounded not like the day before. First I thought that I did not save it correctly, then I installed a commercial set of patches where I could compare it to the demo.Ledbetter wrote:Do you check it with a tuner first? Was totally out of tune, everything with two oscillators sounded so wrong. Tried to to tune OSC2 for one key, but the next key was out of tune again. So I started the calibration routine which was quite faster than last time and it solved the problem. Warm up of half an hour or more was also done before and I use the Auto option for fine tuning. Next time I will check more systematically and use a tuner.

I'm new to synths and just got my first one a month ago (LP)
can somebody please briefly explain the process one has to go through to tune your LP? is it possible to do it one self successfully?

If you mean the calibration:jonalexher wrote:I'm new to synths and just got my first one a month ago (LP)

1 ) press the MASTER button
2 ) scroll to the SYSTEM UTILITIES with the VALUE knob
3 ) press the CURSOR button
4 ) scroll to CALIBRATION
5 ) press the ENTER button
6 ) scroll to NOTE CALIBRATION
7 ) press ENTER
8 ) leave the default range 12 -124 (manual says 116) and press ENTER to start
sit and wait until "NOTE CALIBRATION SUCESSFUL!" is displayed
Check the manual for the other calibrations pg. 37 - 41 in my manual, there might be an updated manual in the download section of moogmusic.com
Re: How often do you calibrate your phatty?
I asked a question about use a tuner, above. Today I noticed my LP was noticeably out of tune, so I am about to calibrate. I spent time today tuning pre sets and saving. Should have come back here for a reminder first!
Good vibes to all.

Did all the calibrations in order, note calibration last, after restoring factory settings. World of difference, almost, as some say, too "smooth" to be analog. Self-calibration was a really good thing to add to the operating system.

Does it make a difference? I picked up a LP on Craigslist for a real bargain yesterday. Upgraded from 2.x to the 3.12 firmware, added the alternate tunings, etc.Ledbetter wrote:Did all the calibrations in order, note calibration last, after restoring factory settings. Decided to do the note calibration this afternoon, but didn't do the others first. It is still calibrating, and after an hour, seems like not quite halfway through. Did I just waste my time?

Re: How often do you calibrate your phatty?
I've found that following the instructions in the manual makes for the best results. Do the calibrations in the order that the manual says to do them in, and you will have a perfectly tuned LP. Doing one or two calibrations is not going to calibrate the LP. If one part is out of tune, the whole thing will be out of tune.AKMacAddict wrote:Does it make a difference? Yeah, do them all in order. Note calibration takes much longer than the others.

And it makes a HUGE difference ~
my two Slims now sound like one in-tune machine ~ just "phatter"!

I just calibrated my gear this weekend ~
I haven't gone through all the patches since running the calibration, but I imagine things will be a bit more "in sync", even with individual patches on single machines. Of course, there's always the fine tune knob to tweak things away from the now closely calibrated oscillators, if needed!
Be sure to let the Phatty warm up before starting the calibration.
I turned mine on about 45 minutes before starting the calibration routines, and everything completed without any hiccups.
I figure it took maybe 1 1/2 hours or so to complete all three routines, though I wasn't really timing them closely.
Easy and painless, and well worth the time!
