LED light replacement

Post by Newmoog » Wed Feb 27, 2013 3:36 pm

Hi Guys,

can anyone please post some pictures showing how to replace the LED lights underneath the clear mod wheels on a Voyager? Circuit board etc. Just to realize what it means before opening the unit, thanks.

TIA

Replacing the LEDs involves removing the mod wheels assembly (from the front, by removing the two top screws that holds the assembly in place), gently lifting it and slightly sliding it out to disconnect the aftertouch ribbon and other connectors, and sliding out the assembly, and accessing the small board underneath the assembly that is facing the clear wheels. Desoldering the old LEDs, and soldering new ones. Re-installation is reverse of removal.

You want to replace them because :?:

I had figured as much...

Be aware though that not all LED are created equals. Some colors last longer than others, some require higher or lower voltages than others, some consume more power than others (expecially high brightness ones).

So, unless you know exactly what types were used by Moog Music, I wouldn't simply put in any other high brightness color ones in there, unless you want to end-up with dim ones or, worst, possibly busted ones...

BTW, blue ones have a much shorter lifespan than other colors, by design. Because of the materials used to produce blue light.

Don't know about the Voyager, but the Little Phatty comes stock wth 3V LED's. Higher power ones can be switched in, but then you have to take power from the 5V cable from the power supply. That's what I ended up doing. E-mail someone at moogmusic.com before making any modifications.

I CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGED VOYAGERS RESULTING FROM MODIFICATIONS I HAVE SUGGESTED.

By the way has anyone any photo of that tiny PCB underneath the mod wheel block? Are your wheel-facing LEDs mounted on the back of the PCB or in their "normal" soldering position?
