Moog delay - alternatives
Moog delay - alternatives
What's the most similar and low-cost alternative to the MF 104? Mainly for mangling electronic sounds like in this vid:

(P.S. I'm sure the Moog is 'unbeatable' but I need a cheaper alternative ASAP)

Well, ANY analog delay would be the cheaper alternative. But, a digital delay will give you far more options, (including double tap/reverse/ping-pong, etc), not to mention much longer delay times.

Re: Moog delay - alternatives
If you need CV capabilities in particular, choose a delay with expression pedal input. Some examples -all analogue- are EHX Deluxe Memory Boy, Deluxe Memory Man with tap tempo, Diamonds FX MemoryLane II, JHS Panther.

Line6 Echo Park is probably the cheapest, I'm sure there are others I the $150 range, but it sounds the best in that price point.
Be more specific. What's your budget? What delays type are you looking for - all analog / digital / tape?

Vibration emanates from all things, even nothing. Using awareness to translate vibration into "music" is something that I am whole heartedly grateful for.

What he said. The Deluxe Memory Boy is the lowest cost (with CV and some features) analog that you'll get.
If you just want a good analog delay with some nice modulation, get the MXR Carbon Copy or the Malekko 616 mk II (good demos here especially by Andy at the bottom: http://malekkoheavyindustry.com/product/ekko-616-mkii/)

Re: Moog delay - alternatives
Thanks for the replies. My main priority is a hands-on interface (similar to Moog delay, no menus etc) and an analogue (or analogue modelled) delay. It doesn't have to be analogue per se, but I don't want anything too digital as I have lots of plugins for that job.
The Memory Man/Boy seems to be a popular choice, as do Strymon's pedals. I'll look into those other models. Seems like Youtube demos are all using guitar, not really helpful as I use synths/samples.

If you have a Eurorack modular already (or, at least, a case and power supply), there's the Pittsburgh Modular Analog Delay module for $250 or something like that. It's got CV I/O too. They also recently introduced a mini-modular system for $699 that packages the Analog Delay with other modules - it's designed for signal processing.

I'm thinking of getting one to address multiple needs that are lacking in my current setup (analog delay, CV sequencer, etc.).

My Memory Boy Deluxe arrived yesterday and I'm having a blast with it. I'musing a Moog EP-2 pedal to control the feedback. Three other CV parameters can also be controlled, but only one at a time.

Re: Moog delay - alternatives
The Strymon Timeline is awesome. It doesn't replace the Moog (especially the non midi versions) but it does an awesome job. It has nearly all the same features in some respects, and lots more in others. From a performance perspective it can be played on its own with the knobs, or can be MIDI controlled, and has a programmable expression port. It's by no means a menu diver... Like the Moog it has "under the hood" features that are really useful. If you are spending this much, it's the one to get. It sounds so smooth, or bent and gnarly. Any other digital pedal (Line6, Eventide, TCElectronic) sound a little digital at times when emulating analog stuff, this one hardly has that digital sound to it - it's there, but you really really need to listen for it.
This is the one pedal that I am glad to have looked past Moog for (mind you, I have a 104z & CV gear already...). If you want Moog sound & functionality, you need to save your pennies.

Way Huge Supa-Puss
Done and done. Way Huge Supa-Puss. Best analog delay I've ever played.

The absolute cheapest analog delay I've ever found that will let you go
into full feedback spaceship mode is the Visual Sound Axle Grease Delay.
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/AxleGrease
Obviously, it has no external/internal modulation, but it responds very
well to manually moving the Time/Repeats parameters.
I have no idea how they can make it at this price ($69.95), but I can tell
you that I've never had any problems with mine. I use them wherever I
need a basic delay so that I can use my MF-104M, Stymon TimeLine, and
DigiTech TimeBender in the more crucial places.
When I was at the Moog Minitaur unveiling in Detroit, I saw "Holy F#@k"
perform with lots of gear on card tables. I thought it was very clever how
they used simple delays connected to the various pulsing sound sources
to momentarily double or quadruple the beat just by turning them on for
brief blasts. They use them like drum machine "FILL" buttons.
