Slim Phatty & Minitaur Questions

Post by madeinfoam » Tue Jan 15, 2013 3:15 am

Hi,
I am about to receive both of these synths, which I am planning to use in conjunction with Logic and I have a couple newbie questions; (sorry If these are really basic)

Audio Interface:

—I do not have an Audio Interface. Do I need one if I want to record the audio or can i just plug into Line In of my macbook?
—If I need it, do I need a MIDI Audio Interface or any will do ?
—Does the quality of the audio interface really matter? I am looking at cheap ones such as the M—AUDIO Fast Track or the Focusrite Scarlett... Will I lose the beautiful sound of the synths by recording with those interfaces?

Workflow:

— From reading the internet and if i understand correctly, my workflow for working with these synths in Logic would be:

MIDI Controller to MIDI IN of the SP > SP Audio Out to Audio Controller Audio In > Audio Controller to Macbook

&

SP USB Midi TO Macbook USB in.

Right?

Thanks!

For a good quality work, you'll need an audio interface. Without it, you're going to have a lot of problem with hearing your work, since the Macbook only have ONE audio connection, wich can be used as audio in OR audio out. The Focusrite 2i2 is a great choice! You won't loose the synth's quality with it... I've done some videos using it and it sounds just like the real thing. I like it quite a lot!!

For connections:
Minitaur AUDIO OUT > Interface AUDIO IN
Slim Phatty AUDIO OUT > Interface AUDIO IN

MIDI Controller MIDI OUT > Slim Phatty MIDI IN > Slim Phatty MIDI THRU > Minitaur MIDI IN

I think the MIDI connection is right, but can't assure you that, since I'm not experienced with it.

Cheers!

PS: You'll have to search if your MIDI controller doesn't have an internal Audio Interface.

Thanks for your replies!!!

So does this... " MIDI Controller MIDI OUT > Slim Phatty MIDI IN > Slim Phatty MIDI THRU > Minitaur MIDI IN " mean that I can use one single MIDI Keyboard and control both Synths at the same time?
Is this a Polychain?

Thanks!
Paul.

Yes, you can control both simultaneously.

"Is this polychain?"
Not exacly... it means you can play both instruments in UNISON with only one "voice".

To make it polychain, you would have to be able to play two voices with them. To make it possible, you'll have to use the key priority, wich controls what keys the Minitaur/Phatty should play if you play a keyboard polyphonically. I know that it is possible with the Phatty, but don't know anything about the Minitaur.

One idea:
Select the key priority to high in the Phatty and low in the Minitaur. It think it'll work!

thanks IgorCristo !

I have an additional question... I just received my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2... How do I send audio from my computer into the Slim Phatty (to use the SP as an external effect), through the Scarlett?
What are the connections I have to make?

Cheers,
Paul.

I didn't try this myself, but I guess it's not hard to do.

The way I see, you can make your DAW/software to output thru Scarlett's output, select channel 2 for the output of the track you wish to send to your Phatty's input. Then just record the channel 1's audio (the one your getting out of the Phatty). I think this will work. I don't know other way... maybe someone with a little more experience than me.

If you discover something is wrong/right, share it!

You'll need a cable going from your audio out device from the computer to the audio in of the Phatty, audio out of the Phatty to the audio in of your Scarlett. The thing is, by using the Phatty as an effect, the Phatty's oscillators will not affect the sound. Only the envelopes and filter will.
