Guys I have both a SP and Minitaur and respectfully suggest each has its strengths. The Minitaur definitely has a different character to my ears and really does full bass well. Its also much more stable on its tuning than my SP (although another post of mine regarding the SP may get an answer as to why my SP is so bad with tuning).
The SP is more flexible than the Minitaur overall but the Mini does what it sets out to do; create great bass sounds in a cheap and easy package. The SP has memories and and arpeggiator whereas the Mini does not plus the SP has much greater control. Also, the Minitaur is limited as to what midi notes it will receive. I believe it goes up to note 72 (from memory) meaning that higher midi notes won't sound.
Two different products at different price points, each with strengths!
Minitaur vs. Slim Phatty
Re: Minitaur vs. Slim Phatty
The Minitaur is a whole different sound engine from the SP. It was designed to be a smaller, easily editable version of the Taurus 3 with some additional features. The SP is a Little Phatty without a keyboard. Two entirely different synths capable of entirely different sounds, both a great value.
I'd get one of each, if I were you.

Minitaur, CP-251, EHX #1 Echo, EHX Space Drums/Crash Pads, QSC GX-3, Pyramid stereo power amp, Miracle Pianos, Walking Stick ribbon controller, Synthutron.com, 1983 Hammond organ, dot com modular.

Re: Minitaur vs. Slim Phatty
these Moogs, they can play in eachother's registers but they are all VERY different instruments ~ Minitaur vs. Slim Phatty & the Voyager too
i'm glad to have one of each ~ as well as #1~ the SOUND ~another major difference between them all is the interface and how you can actually play each of them.
in comparing the Minitaur to the Phatty note ~at least until Rev2* - the Minitaur is very much one function per knob~ like the Voyager which is actually considerably easier to understand than a Minitaur- meanwhile, the Phatty on the other hand is totally different again ~ it's interface is compacted into a series of several button & functions assigned to each knob which can be a lot more static and limiting performing with it in real time, relatively speaking...
It would be very cool if MOOG could make a breakout box CV expander similar to the VX-351 for the Voyager for the Phatty & the Minitaur too~ so rather than just modulating Volume,Pitch,Filter, Gate, -"IN" we could get some CV and LFO "OUT"s ~ did I hear a rumour that that is actually in the cards for future release?
*as for the original post OP
~ now you CAN store presets in the Minitaur with free MOOG software on your computer
and then recall them without having the computer hooked up

Breakout box would be fantastic! But I have no clue where could you attach it? There is no port for that on Phatty.
But That would bring Phatty to a new level!
One thing that is really cool is that you can have a dedicated (programmed) controller for all parameters on Phatty. Perhaps without need to passthrough or track or snap modes... Endless encoders, switches and even a programmed pads for LFO/Arp clock divider!
