Minimoog/Source techs in NY/NJ--who do you like?

Post by leohuppert » Mon Oct 15, 2012 9:27 pm

hi all..

i'm the 2nd owner of a minimoog (#8871) and a source (#4336). here's the rundown:

the source was a recent acquisition from a friend who bought it new, literally used on a couple gigs in the early 80's, didn't like it and put it back in the box. so it's all but brand new. i posted here last week about the one issue i have with it concerning oscillator modulation, and got some great feedback. the advice given (thanks, alien666) was specific and encouraging, but far beyond my technical expertise.

the mini has a few more problems going, but the oscillators have always been stable (i used it every nite thru the 80's), and i believe that it's not beyond being brought back to full functionality. i won't go into the full laundry list, but it includes:
-osc 3 problems, both in lfo and pitched mode
-pitch bend inaccuracy (massive)
-top 5 or so notes of the kb triggering and then rising in pitch, like a slow gliss when held
-keyboard is worn (bushings?)

actually, that does about cover all the problems, come to think of it.

so my question is, since i live in the ny/nj metro area, there are quite a few places that tout 'vintage synth repair'. but i have no prior knowledge of any of them. i need to know which guys you all would trust with your babies. i love these synths and would rather have them as they are now than left in the hands of an inept tech. i can't really say that money is no object (i AM a freelance musician), but i do believe you get what you pay for, as long as you do your homework first. so i'm asking for your combined input based on your (hopefully) first hand experience with the shops.

huge thanks in advance...

Bob Twining of TSR in Whitney Point NY is the guy I take repairs to. Very competent. He's a vintage synth nut like us.

Source repair update--
thanks to all for the good input. i found a place close to me called threewave music (threewavemusic.com), talked with the owner/tech Sam for a while and decided to leave it in his hands. he's been at this 30 +years and i immediately felt he was on top of it. he got the repair done a week early, and i was able to pick it up the day after Sandy hit here. his shop was undamaged by the storm, and if you check out his inventory, there was a LOT at stake had things gone wrong.

his rates are very reasonable, about half of nyc rates. i think i'm going to give him my model D and turn him loose on it.

and thanks to alien666. you were right on, man. U49 was indeed blown. a simple fix, and the Source is now back to original factory spec. life is good.
