scratchy sound in my Minitaur

Post by cyclops » Tue Aug 21, 2012 7:14 am

Got my Minitaur a week ago and its a great synth, i really love the sound and feel liberated by no menu's and no screens, but i had a few issues that i hope i can clear up.

1 - I noticed a scratchy type sound that is always present when woking in the low bass ranges and its always there and im not sure if this is normal for a analog synth like this,
here is a link to a Soundcloud file that you can hear it on, for demo purposes i made a basic kick type sound

http://soundcloud.com/cyklops/moog-mt-n ... -a/s-fc0u9

i dont have USB connected when i do this test and i disconnected things one at a time to see if it was caused from any any other source and it wasent. is this normal for a Minitaur ?

2 - I also notice i have a very bad digital noise when i connect the USB cable to my Mac and its unusable to record with so i mapped my controller with the most important parameters and just connect to USB when i want to save a preset, even if i disconnect my MacBooks power supply at the wall i still get the digital noise

Basically i was left with just the Minitaurs power supply plugged and USB to the MacBook Pro on battery and it was still there, my audio interface is a Firebox and its buss powered, so its isolated to the Mintuars power supply in my opinion, has anyone else solved this ? maybe a new power supply ?

basically as soon as i plug the Minitaurs power supply into the wall (not plugged into the minitaur yet) with my speakers turned up i hear the noise, when i plug it into the Minitaur the noise clears up but then i connect the USB cable to a computer and its back.

other than this its a awesome synth and im glad i got it

Hey bud.
I had the same problem and after talking to moogs tech support they recommended that i return it or send it to them to have a look (i used soundcloud for my demos too). Id try to return it for another unit. It was bugging me big time although it was technically "barely noticable". The new one i exchanged it for (from Guitar Center) didnt have the scratch sound at all.

Good luck man.

I would like to hear an update on this. Is your unit still free of noise? I'm noticing a similar effect at some settings on my unit. (This is a separate issue from the USB connection electrical noise problem I posted about in a different thread).

I got a replacement unit, apparently it might be tunning or calibration problem but no fix yet

Yes i got a replacement with the same problem from the supplier, this one is not nearly as bad as my first one, on this unit i hardly notice it but its there and its not a pleasant noise as you have heard, Moog USA is sending me a another one that they tested,

Moog have been super helpful though
