Cluster Flux high pitch noise/delay time multiplier

Post by mydni » Wed Jun 27, 2012 11:27 am

Hi,
I've bought a cluster flux yesterday, wonderful box but..
I was testing the midi functionality and when I activate de delay multiplier (chorus mode with delay time to 10), a really high pitch noise is produced which makes the function unusable.
Hope this is not normal !
Please let me know.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Greg

Hi Greg,

There are experienced engineers here who can give a much better
electronic explanation, but I'd like to at least offer an analogy:

When you buy a DVD of an all time classic movie (made long before
studios created "Bonus Footage" on purpose), you get the main movie,
and then, for those die-hard fans who want every last frame of footage
ever shot, they give you everything they could find in the vaults.

Sometimes there's a mic in the shot; sometimes the director liked it...
but it just didn't serve the movie, and sometimes it would have changed
the movie's ratings.

The bonus footage may not always look as perfect as the original movie,
but it's way cooler to have it than to not have it.

So, back to analog delays (which is what a Chorus/Flange/Vibrato is):

There is a fixed limitation on how radically you can push the Delay Time
with a certain number of Buckets (of a BBD) before you get audible
artifacts. This is why we don't have "True Analog" 8-second delay pedals;
but you can have 22 seconds or more with digital delays.

The folks at Moog give you the power to do "illegal things" to parameters
that other companies would be afraid to offer. Try to find anyone else's
true analog Flange/Chorus that lets you go far beyond 50ms of delay.

Although the quirks will initially offend some, there are others who will
appreciate the steam punk qualities that come from pushing parameters
beyond their "recommended" amounts. Typically, Moog chooses to make
those "illegal" parameters NOT available from the front panel. This helps
to show what the pedal is originally intended to do, and then show what
else it can also do.

Hope this helps. (Hope I didn't ramble too much.)

But, in the end, consider that you bought a Chorus/Flange/Vibrato. To
a degree, it can also do some other crazy things, But it is, and continues
to be an awesome Chorus/Flange/Vibrato!

DemonDan you must be a teacher :D
What a beautiful explanation of such a technical artefact. Great!

Indeed, a really great explanation.
Thank you very much DemonDan.

One thing I have found that is if i put a low pass filter in the feedback loop and take out the top end it can really smooth out these extreme and long setting on the cluster. May be worth a try?
