Voyager sighting

Post by tunedLow » Fri Jul 22, 2005 4:22 am

Saw Cold Play on t.v. twice now, saw a Minimoog Voyager on both. Looks like the bassist might be using it, it was next to him anyway. Din't see it get played, may be there for looks... :)

Guy Berryman has a large collection of vintage synths . . most bought from rlmusic.co.uk

They played it on the last song, their new single, speed of sound. They show shots of the bassist playing it. He plays it during the first and second verse. I just happened to be flipping by the channel at the perfect moment and saw the voyager so I watched. Not a big fan of tired radio rock like coldplay but it was cool to see the voyager...though it would be so much cooler to see an album leaf vh1 storytellers. And you would see the moog (and many other great synths) used much more often.

what synth is he using for the chords and strings, it has a very familiar sound but I'm drawing a blank. I'm sure that it isn't Chris' Kawai MP9000 but I've been known to be wrong in the past.

I've got an odd suspicion that the singer / piano player (still haven't learned everyone's names) uses a PianoBar attached to his Yamaha upright, somehow. The bass player wasn't using the Mm Voyager for its internal sounds, but as (hold yor breath) a MIDI controller for a piano sound. I'd imagine that it's pretty limiting in that way.

I saw Coldplay's eppisode of VH1 Storytellers once, which is where I got these conclusions.

John Hawken of The Strawbs got his Voyager earlier this year, and uses it on their latest album. Having used a Mini on their earlier albums he's reportedly delighted with the patch memories on the Voyager.

Is John Hawken's playing anything like that of Rick Wakeman, or Tony Kaye?

He's less flamboyant than Rick (but then, so are most of us, maybe :D).

He's not really like Tony Kaye, either, from my (perhaps limited) knowledge of his playing (Time and a Word, The Yes Album, and later on Big Generator).

There was a lengthy debate amongst Strawbs fans recently on the relative merits of John, Rick Wakeman and Blue Weaver as keyboard players in The Strawbs. That was on Witchwood@yahoogroups.com, so there should be an archive of the discussion.

That'd give a much more varied and comprehensive answer than I could give alone. I think the general feeling, if I remember rightly, was that John had a way of getting inside the songs and creating depth. That'd certainly be true of a song like Autumn on the Hero and Heroine album.

But all the Strawbs keboard players seem to have brought very different things to the band, and all of them have fitted their role in different ways. John Hawken certainly has his own unique feel, which works well in the context of the band. It's interesting how they've made great use of Rick's playing, Blue's (check out the excellent `Flying' on the Bursting at the Seams album), and John's.

I haven't heard anything from The Strawbs since the early 70's, are they still putting out cd's and touring? I can't remember the name of the album but my friend played it until the vinyl basically wore out.

Yes, they're still touring and still going strong, both as an acoustic line-up and electric. There's a new album on the way.

I suggest you check out the Yahoo group I gave the link to in my earlier e-mail. It's a great source of all things related to the band, and has close links with the band members.

The Strawbs must be one of the most underrated bands of all time.
