Why did moog pull the pin on the delay?

Hey all, Why did you think moog stopped making the delay?

Limited supply of BBD chips?

Indeed. I asked this question before, and most seem to agree that it’s a result of the limited supply of BBD chips. Which is also why the Cluster Flux has a limited run (i think  )

(yes, I’m the asshole that made a double post )

Rhooo come on

I don’t think the BBD chip supply was the only reason why it was DC.

So many people have had issues with the pedal messing up. They came up with a “permanent fix” for it. Mine is said to have had said fix and it still messes up.

I think the permanent fix was to dc it.

Interesting , so I should buy a Cluster Flux soon then! got to pay off my new XL first

Dam I want a moog delay! whats your thoughts on the electro harmonix memory boy?

@ErikK - could you please clarify how the pedal messed up Erik? I am asking because I recently got an original 104 and would like to keep an ear out for any potential problems!

Yes, get your cluster flux soon before the price goes up when they run out.

Apparently the EHX Memory Man Deluxe series sounds great / uses the same BBD chips . . . however, the Memory Boy uses the cheaper Chinese chips (see the second link from my earlier post), so it may not sound quite as amazing, hence the “boy” instead of the “man”

memory man it is, after the flux… hopfully they are still around when I pay off my xl

This is also well documented on the forum.

The pedal will intermittently fail to self-oscillate. Maybe 4 repeats max (my experience) or a very low output volume. Some people claim that this is due to the jumper on the daughter board shorting out on the chassis, and the USER “fix” is to place a card or a piece of paper to isolate the pin from the chassis. This fix has had mixed results.

Mine has been sent back to the factory twice in 6 months. The first time, resistors were replaced in the output buffer, and the second time, protection diodes were installed. The problem is an intermittent one, so unplugging and reattaching the power supply might fix it. It might be on for an hour and then fail, or it might fail when it’s cold.

It recently failed again after being unused for several months due to a move (stowed away in a rack cabinet and not in storage or anything). I did not feel like going through the return process again, so I called them and talked to a tech at Moog.

He told me that they had a meeting and discussed the 104z, and they came up with a permanent fix for it. If I am quoting him correctly, he said that they set it up to run 1000v through it and it did not fail. He then told me that my particular unit contained the permanent fix.

I have really been considering selling it, but it sounds so fantastic. It is my desert island pedal for sure. THe last time I sent it back I had decided to sell it, then Moog (perfect timing) announced it would be discontinued.

So though I have the most minimal amout of superficial basic electronics, I believe that protection diodes address the symptoms and not the cause. There has to be some sort of voltage spike occuring somewhere. Sometimes I would notice that it would fail when the bypass switch was depressed or if I accidentally removed the power supply.

Hopefully you never encounter this.

Eric

Interesting. I overload the shit out of mine and have no issues. I also push it to the limit as well. Maybe I am lucky? I didnt know until now that there might be issue with it. The only fooger I have issues with is the freakbocks. And those “issues” are all along the lines of levels of controls, so more user than hardware. BTW those issues are sweet for noise/punchy type of stuff. Whatever though.

Good to know I guess. I might try and keep an ear out for it I guess, lol

edit I like how s-h-i-t word filters to bleep. nice imagery for the toilet!

Eric, what you have said relates to 104z and that 104 and 104SD do not display the same sort of behaviour?

I honestly have no idea. I would speculate that it is only with the Z, but theres not enough information and I’m not really the one who would be in a position to know.

I know that at least two people on this forum (myself being one of them) had issues with the Z.

Clip the pins, man.

I have a Big Briar MF-104 that I picked up in Kyoto, Japan back sometime late-2002/early-2003. They had two - the run had already run out, I should have grabbed the other one - I decided to go back and grab it but it was already bought by someone via the internet. I’m glad I have my one though - I haven’t had any problems with it, just have to be careful not to overload it when I put bass through it! :sunglasses:

It’s featured pretty prominently here (along with an MF-101 & Moog Rogue) and here (most noticeable at the end, really dark sounding). I like it on lead sounds, I also like my Roland RE-201 that I also picked up in Japan around 2005, totally different sounding - I like the Space Echo better when the feedback is cranked.

If I remember correctly, they only made 1000, because of the limited supply of bucket brigade chips. I was surprised when the Z & SD came out, but I guess there are little pockets of chips left out there, various companies seem to come out with analog delays now and again.

I like the first track a lot, I’ve listened to it several times in the past months. I’d just love to have a Bass VI home… even more than a Taurus!

I’ve just picked up a RE-20. I don’t know the real thing but I must say this makes excellent ambients out of Rhodes wanders. Different from the 104z or even the EHX Deluxe Memory Man indeed.

I like the RE-20. I’ve recorded with it when I wanted a longer delay than I can get with my RE-201 and a cleaner, brighter sound than the MF-104. Also the fact that it’s stereo - run your Rhodes through a ping-pong vibrato like the EHX Pulsar and then into the RE-20!

I had tried that particular setting and it sounds great indeed! Yeah, my Rhodes has the built-in panner since it’s ahem… a Nord Electro
