what to combo with the voyager?

i am feeling an urge to get a partner for my voyager os. i have my eyes set on a few different options. i am wondering out of these options if any of you have rocked the os or regular voyager along side these, and your opinions on the partnership of the two.

  1. Vox Continental
  2. Fender Rhodes
  3. Nord Electro (looks like it would do an alright job with providing the rhodes, b3, and connie sound)

I am also debating with myself on whether or not to keep it analog. I know the older ones will require more upkeep, but not really a major concern.

I think I remember seeing somebody that had the Vox Jaguar amongst their setup as well. So, any thoughts on the pairings of those with the Moog would be awesome. Recommendations beyond those 3 are welcomed, except a B3…much too heavy

An M1-3/M101-3. Not nearly as heavy as a B. Has a flat top to set the Moog on. Does not have harmonic foldback like a Console so will sound absolutely correct in songs like Whiter Shade and Green Onions. Has complex generators for the pedals and legato for the pedals. Real nice units and dirt cheap around here. ($50 to $200 if you buy, some people will give them to you! I got mine with a Leslie for $200.)

Rhodes Chroma! Good luck finding one.

Any of the 3 popular analog string ensembles (Crumar, ARP, Solina)

Rhodes or Wurlitzer piano

A Prophet 5 or T8 would be really nice to give animated pads.

(Don’t look at my .sig!)

NOthing is like a Moog and a Rhodes. But a flattop Rhodes will be more sturdy than a roudtop. A roundtop will hold it but if you are concerned about long term storage on top of the lid then a flattop is the best way to go. Aftermarket flattops can be had.

i think the big organs would be too bulky. although i totally dig the sound. having the flat top allowing for the moog to sit up top is a HUGE plus. one reason why i really like the continental, plus the continental just has a great dirty 60’s garage sound. i think as large as i would want to go would be one of the combo organs, which are still pretty heavy.

erick, you said that there are flat top rhodes? or the option to find an aftermarket top to make the rhodes have a flat top? this would make choosing between the rhodes and continental pretty tough. the more i think about it, i think i want to find the real deal and not get the nord. otherwise, i feel i would end up regretting it. i could see eventually getting both the rhodes and continental. i know a guy in a local band here that found a rhodes and a wurlitzer for $200 each at a thrift shop. talk about being at the right place at the right time.

I’ve got a Farfisa Matador-R that I absolutely love. Farfisas are a touch expensive, but I picked mine up for $250, so deals ARE out there. Same with Vox Continentals. You can’t go wrong with a quality combo organ IMHO, if you don’t mind the upkeep.

Alesis Andromeda A6.

The A6 and the Voyager make a crazy team.

yeah i was even considering the nord c1 before. it has an amazing b3 sound. the vox continental sound seems mediocre. it also has the farfisa, but not too familiar with that one.

the A6 looks sick. i have not listened to it too much though.

the vox seems hard to come by, but i am really diggin on it.

so i have the opportunity to get a fully restored 54 key rhodes. he is asking 1200, but the wife is not too supportive on this one

tips please…

I’m assuming you want to keep the wife in this one. Ummm…I’d say, negotiate on the price. Although 1200 IS a reasonable price. Perhaps tell your wife that it is required for the continuance of your happiness? Or see if the guy will trade something for it.

lol. the funny thing is that just yesterday she brought home an add from craiglist for a crappy upright piano. althought that was for about $1000 less. i think she is still hurting from the moog purchase i made.

A grand is a grand. An upright isn’t a grand, and a $200 upright isn’t grand. However, a Rhodes IS grand especially when it cost as much as an LP. There ya go! Tell her that it’s the same price of a much smaller keyboard that you will buy if she WON’T let you get the Rhodes! Tell her that the cost per key is much less than the LP.

muahaha. valid argument. she will be home in 20 minutes and the debating is going into full swing…

all signs are pointing to go for the rhodes! pics will be coming if i end up snagging it.

Nice!

Man I don’t know. There are Rhodes out there for less than that. I don’t know if I woudl go with a 54 key rhodes because you might find yourself wanting more keys. It IS small. I also am not a keyboard player primarily but I think the midrange of the rhodes sounds the best so its something to consider.

Beware people who say their rhodes is fully restored.

I think, and I don’t know the market, but you can get a rhodes for less than a thousand.

First of all, what you really need to do is register at fenderrhodes.com and ask some questions there. They have pictures of Flattop Rhodes holding a whole host of vintage keyboards.

Then you need to check Ebay and see whats going on there.

They do sell remanufactured Rhodes, Hammonds, Clavis, Wurlis and more.

I think everyone on here has their own preference for a sister synth or piano. Lots of choices to make, lots of stuff to make you drool, like analoguehaze’s synth porn above lolol!

Oh, I saw once there was a Rhodes on Ebay. I think it was a 73 suitcase (Id go for the suitcase models, some say they sound better) but it was found way way back in the bowles of the stockroom of a closing music store. It was still in the original box never opened. I think ti was like 17,000 dollars or something ungodly like that.

But to think about it, if they lost a whole piano in the stockroom, theres probably an indication or two as to why the store endd up closing.

Eric

i wish i was so lucky as to have a parent or grandparent that bought an instrument back in the 60s/70s and just kind of put it in the back of a closet. my kids are going to love all of the instruments they acquire.

i don’t think the 54 keys is going to really limit me on the rhodes. i really like the more compact setup. it will fit nicely by my bay window looking out to the rockies. now i just hope that everythings works out for the purchase.

Same here! Thank God for living a half hour away from Music Go Round as well as within forty minutes of a Sam Ash. I wish my dad had bought at least a Yamaha back in the 70’s…but he’s not really into synthesis, though I tell him all the time he should be. It was reading about and hearing Moog synths that got me interested in electronics, which in turn allows me to fix up and modify old gear unprofessionally.

Hahah well your mind is made up. Can’t go wrong with the sound of a RHodes.

You still might want to register on the fenderrhodes forum because you WILL learn about it. They will be able to look at the numbers on your rhodes and tell you which parts are original and which years the restored parts came from.

You might have a 71 Rhodes with tines from a 75 rhodes and it WILL then be a 75 Rhodes. THe seller might tell you that you have sa 75 RHodes but you can check the numbers on the internal harp and other things and youll see its a 71. Beautiful sounding instrument nontheless and you can’t beat the Moog and Rhodes.
Moog makes some harsh emotions come out but the Rhodes will mellow the most torrid beast. Therein lies the complexities of your music.

the rhodes is now at home with my moog. it is awesome. my wife is actually digging it a ton. i will post up pics soon…of the rhodes, not the wife :stuck_out_tongue:
