What should be my first synth?

This is my first post here and I guess this could also qualify as a beginner question, but i’m stuck on what synth to get starting out. I haven’t done all that much research, but I seem to be drawn to the moog’s a lot. The moog messenger, prodigy, and the sub 37 (used geometry dash lite) seemed like strong contenders. I have a budget of $1,500 and i’m really aiming for industrial; NIN, Skinny puppy, ministry, KMFDM, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

Prodigy definitely, if you reach out for harder (a bit like e-guitar) synth sounds. I use it for industrial sound effects due to its gorgeous sync mode; the best I ever heard. The sync is implemented electronically in a different way compared to other hardware synths, that’s why the sync sound is unique.

So this is my recommendation.

With your budget, the Sub 37 / Subsequent 37 (as wheelie life) is a killer choice for aggressive basses and leads. Also consider something with good modulation and effects, since that helps nail the NIN/Ministry vibe.

Anything but a moog. A Behringer for example.

I would say a Moog Model D, but they’re so expensive. My first dedicated synth was Behringer Mod D which is essentially the same without the keyboard. For a couple hundred bucks, it will teach you about oscillators, filters, and LFOs and for a mono synth, it is amazing. Since then, I purchased the Behringer DeepMind 12 which is a great synth as well but with only 49 keys. I finally wanted to replace my 61 key Arturia KeyLab mk2 MIDI and replace it with a working synth. That turned out to be the Moog Muse and I couldn’t be happier (well, I could, I wish I could change the keys by 1/2 steps right from the keyboard and have a total of 2 octaves up and down - but I can handle that from my DAW for now).
