Seeing as the Polymoog was never particularly successful in terms of its polyphony or of its reliability (especially the first 3,000 units made), what Polymoog should I buy?

I’d go with the Polymoog Synthesizer (model 203A) and not the Polymoog Keyboard (model 280). Again, the serial # would be 3001 or higher for the best chance of reliability.

Have there ever been any Polymoogs from any year 1975-80 that lasted longer thanks to certain repair techniques that many of us may not have been aware of?

Hey Ben,

You might want to check out Synthpro’s Polymoog Keyboard videos. He’s been reviving them himself, and mentioned using some new parts that were considerably cheaper and easier to source. Plus, I think they’re just plain cool sounding and informative.

Get the synth version. It’s adjustable - and there are ONLY a few presets on the other. With the adjustable options you get MUCH better sounds. It’s a weird keyboard - not good if you like space sounds. But it’s GREAT if you’re a real player, someone who knows how to use both hands and chord work - like a pianist. I find other people get frustrated at the lack of range on a Polymoog. It’s sounds are great - really clear and strong, but plain - like a piano or Hammond or Rhodes. So it’s good if you have “chops” or are a songwriter. Not good for leads or bass or FX - good for musical parts!
