way to clean pot?

I usually use my pedal when doing on the fly filter openings/closings, so haven’t noticed this until now- My filter knob when slowly turned is a little scratchy, like the pot is dirty, which could be true since I drag this all over the place in many different environs…
Anyone had any pot cleaning experience with their Voyager?

Don’t pots have a tendency to get scratchy when they aren’t used a lot? From what I understand, you can remedy this by turning it fully back and forth until it goes away.

I will defer to those more experienced.

MC or Kevin will give the official answer… oh wait. There is no official answer; fact is that some people talk about using Deoxit, others (I’m one) say it will screw up a pot by dissolving all of the grease (depending on type).

Could be more contraversial than the “when the heck is Moog going to release a Poly” debate/discussion, but seriously, there are long threads of discussion about best wait to maintain sliders which are obviously much more prone to scratchiness than pots, but some people swear by a certain brand of dielectric grease, others say run it dry, etc etc.

The volume pot on my Matrix 1000 is so bad it goes out at certain points; so I just have it stuck in a known good place.
The so-called top-quality high end, super expensive pots on my MOTM 120 are scratchy as hell and many complain about the cheap Alpha pots and their longevity.

My $1,200 Mesa bass head has a scratch Volume pot and it drives me up the wall every time I adjust it and it’s been sitting in the corner of my living room since I bought it 2 years ago.

But having wasted 5 minutes of your time, just wait for a real answer. I think the control board in the Voyager is accessible enough, though alot of work to pull out; I’d just replace it myself.

Funny you should mention this brand, that’s exactly what is inside a Voyager Old School (and most probably other Voyager models too).

Heck, even the well renowned sealed type Allen-Bradley in a Minimoog D will become scratchy after prolonged non-use, like 15 years in storage, but usually by moving them from one end to the other about 50 times will remove the scratchiness on those.

well, Alpha pot or not, repeatedly cranking it did the trick- thanks

A trick and old engineer taught off was to use a tiny dab of 3 in one oil, some say this attract’s dust but from what the engineer told me the scratchiness is cause more by corrosion than dust anyway.

Remember a little dab “will do ya” I’ve fixed many scratchy pot’s this way and just fixed the one on my pig nose amp
it had and extremely bad contact problem to the point of dropping out and it is as always with this trick it is now completely gone.
Some pot’s are sealed better than others so the trick is getting the right amount inside without making a mess.
