so… after a week of having my SP I sent it back. I never actually even got it fully in tune… never had time to. I did have it on for an hour and a half and it was pretty close to in tune but still was a little off. Now I’m not sure if I should get a little phatty stage 2 or hope that a replacement SP will tune quicker?
I had a tuning issue with my slim phatty, and it turns out that it was my fault (not saying this is what’s causing your problem though). I had a doepfer ribbon controller controlling the pitch via CV, and I still had the phatty set on auto-tune . . . oops. Once I figured this out and corrected it, I still had some minor issues so I updated the OS and ran the calibration, and presto, problem solved. Nowadays, my phatty warms up and gets in tune in about 5-10 minutes. If you install the latest OS and run the calibration and it’s still not working properly, I’d get a new one. But, the slims, in general, are not faulty. Bad luck may have just dealt you a sour unit.
Good post, namahshaman. The situation on tuning issues with the SP is unclear. Newbies don’t master their equipment just yet, and since this forum’s input is mostly from users, there’s not always a solution posted for every issue, even when it should be a non-issue. There are a number of urban legends still roaming around.
Well basically after an hour of having it on the auto tune it would still be changing the pitch a good 50 cents and at the top of the keyboard it would be 90 cents
I hope you get the matter resolved with the SP. I did not want to imply that the issue is closed at all, but just some kind of satisfaction that the SP works well at least for some users. The last word has not been written on this. Call Moog if you have not done so already. I would not be a happy customer myself with a unit that takes an hour to tune, if at all.
Going to sound a little odd, but I own 3 LP’s and I never got them to stay in tune with the Auto Tune function. I always let mine warm up about 25 minutes, use the 1 oscillator ‘calibration’ patch and tune it. Usually works like a charm. I have just given up on the whole Auto Tune thing, it sounded too good to be true and for me at least it is.
Forgive me for being completely new to Moog, and analog synthesis in general but, what exactly do you mean here? I’m not really sure if my SP is in tune or not, and I don’t know how to check! I guess see that it comes to 60.00 in the display? Maybe I should search a bit harder! lol
Not sure how the SP menu screen works, but if you have a MASTER button, press it, and use the VALUE knob to get to TUNING. Press CURSOR and use the VALUE knob to set tuning to AUTO, and watch the numbers. After it hits 60.00, leave the thing alone for a while, like 15-30 minutes.
BTW, you should be running OS 3.03…if not, don’t worry about it. Amos is working on another update. I think I skipped one software update…1. something. 1.1, maybe? I started with 1.03C, and am currently running 3.1S, upgraded from 2.21.
Sorry I forgot to mention the difference between ‘Fine’ and the ‘Auto tune’. If you disable auto tune you can then use the fine tune knob on the front panel to tune instead. I just use the tuner in my DAW or live I use an iPad app to tune. I’ve never had an issue using this method, after letting my LP warm up for about 20 minutes.
Sorry, I was more asking about the “calibration” patch and what that is. And THANKS! Wtf I don’t know why I didn’t think of looking for a tuner app on my iPhone. My music-illiterate mind was just thinking “how am I supposed to know what is tuned or not?” over and over again. Forgive my newbiness!
It’s a non issue, no need to apologize. The calibration patch is found at 00 on the LP, not sure if it’s the same on the SP. it’s essentially just a single oscillator patch with no modulation.
