Voyager MIDI Question with older synth

Hi-all!
I have a Korg DW8000, which I have loved until it’s kb went mostly silent. I bought it’s rack-mount brother, the EX8000. Using my Voyager as controller (gasp), I have used the Dw8000 to some good effect. But the EX8000, arrived today, will not “see” key data. It WILL see pitch and Mod data though. As i am familiar with these units, can anyone offer me a possible explanation ? I have even tried to controll it with the DW, and it won’t even ‘speak’ to it.
All parameters have been looked at carefully. I also have no idea if I could find anyone to service this unit, as it is probably 20 years old. I know my DW is 21.
I have heard about different 'standards for MIDI in the early days, but doubt that’s the issue here. Could a MIDI circuit read one set of data, and NOT the other ? ( oh yes I know about note-only, etc., but it is configured properly, channel, etc.)
Thanks in advance.

If there is a special mode where the EX8000 is acting as a voice expansion for the DW8000 then the reacting to pitchbend without acting on note data would make sense.

I spent the weekend on it. None of my midi equipment will trigger the unit. Not even raw data from midi-Ox. All cables are good, the Ex8000 has been set to ‘global’', and channels are correct. And every once in awhile, the Ex midi light will blink, but no sound. I do get sound if I hit the tune button, so i know the output is okay.
