I found the best way [so far] to obtain that huge modular sound with a Voyager/Phatty combination.
First I grabbed a midi cable and connected the Voyager’s midi output to the Little Phatty’s midi in. The audio output of the LP was connected to the input of external audio Voyager. Then I played with Voyager’s external audio volume knob. At the beginning of the clip you can hear the sound of the Little Phatty becoming increasingly present. After this I corrected the LP tuning with LP’s front panel knob. When you adjust portamento time with Voyager’s ‘Glide’ knob on this configuration, you automatically adjust LP’s portamento as well [through midi], which is a fantastic feature. A modicum of reverb, and time to play! The oscilloscope-like waveform shows the looks of a high-frequency moog filter-pulled square wave. What about that sizzle!
Thanks for the post! I’m interested in the difference of sound that a single osc in the Phatty has with a single osc in the Voyager. Do you have any thoughts, is there a difference in them when the LP passes through the same audio chain as the Voyager?
Hi, thanks for the reply. This was the first time I played both instruments, so these are preliminar impressions. Square waves sounded like a match case to me. I will post more information as soon as I do a couple of tests.
Both 1 osc. L.P. (left) and 1 osc. Voyager (right) sound and look the same. Most probably they come from similar (or the same) circuitry; I can see no reason why they would behave differently under the same conditions.
This suits me fine . I bought the L.P. mainly for live work but I can use it as additional module.
Thanks for the sound samples, Filipe. The reason I asked about differences is because the Phatty is said to have filter overdrive which the Voyager lacks. I haven’t heard it myself so I asked.
I am thinking that as a Voyager owner there isn’t much to convince me to also get a Phatty, although the slim priced version is making that harder to say. However, you are very happy with both and the Phatty obviously easily works along side the Voyager.
Hi LivePsy, here’s a sample of a progressively overdriven tone.
One could argue that the same effect could be obtained in Voyager with techniques such as those described in Knob Tweak.
Well yes, but perhaps not for free and certainly not instantly, which is not an issue if you like spending time with your main voices .
As a module I like L.P.'s consistency with Voyager. Very useful for carefully crafted sounds.
But my main concern was Voyager preservation. Last week I took L.P. to rehearsal and despite all the precautions it fell. (No harm done)
I don’t want to think that could happen to the Voyager!
Although the Voyager manual states that you can “gently overdrive the filter” by having the osc levels all the way up on the mixer (Page 18), there is no sign of distortion of the output of my Voyager at all. I must have one of the Hi-Fi models. Thanks for the snippet of overdriven Phatty, I think I can do as well with an overdrive pedal but without being built into a preset. But with the CP, VX and a Dark Energy mine is getting less and less preset every day. If I’m not always ready to record then I can miss something hard to recreate again…
I felt the Phatty’s pain when you dropped it at rehearsal May that never happen to any Moog
Fortunately the L.P. did not fell from its stand or anything like that, it just reached the bottom of the bag a fraction of a second earlier than it should. A big scare, though.
Do you use CV or midi to control Dark Energy from your Voyager/ VX ?
I didn’t bother with the CV to the DE, although its perfectly possible. I just chained the midi thru of the Voyager to the DE. In fact, the MIDI to CV seems unnecessary on the DE but because it is there, I use it. If the DE didn’t have a MIDI to CV converter I wouldn’t be bothered at all with using the pitch and gate out from the Voyager CV expander. The 1v/oct is pretty accurate, just slightly flat over the Voyager 3.5 octave range. The only incompatible thing is the 1/8 sockets, but 30 minutes of soldering plugs and cables fixed that for me.
