Tech Fellows...I need your help. Potentiometers+memorymoog=?

Hello,
I believe the 10k and the 100k trim pots used on the voice cards of the Memorymoog are made by Bourns (so I have heard)…Now, I am not a grock so I need help finding the right ones. I am posting a page from the bourns online catalog..If someone could just silently point at which part numbers are the 10k for scale and the 100k for range, I will send you flowers and candy.
this is the bourns website (I think there is only one of you who knows this…,ehem!)

http://www.bourns.com/components.aspx?cmsphid=7631383|7163299|895905

Thank you in advance for your help.
And no, I will not be doing the job myself (I would blow something up).
P.S. what about the 10k “HI” pots; same as the 10k scale pots?

I don’t have my MM here, but Bourns pots have a four digit part number stamped on them. Most catalogs include the manufacturers part number so that will help narrow it down. Be careful, they may also have a date code on them which is also a four digit number, usually YYWW where YY is last two digits of the year and WW is the week (01 to 52) of manufacture. Just so you know what you’re looking at.

The HI TRIM trimpot is not the same as the scale pot. I wouldn’t worry about those. Those hold up really well, I haven’t had any problems with the trimpots like those used on HI TRIM.

Not a criticism, but if you’re not going to do the tech work yourself, why are the one looking for the trimmers? Wouldn’t a qualified tech know more and likely already have accounts with most major suppliers?
I quit working on Memorymoogs, but even I have most trimmers in stock.
A memorymoog is definitely not a synth for an amateur to work on, so if you’re going to use a pro tech, you should probably just leave the parts up to them.

Also, I’d recommend overhauling the power supply completely.
New caps, trims, resoldering and possibly even new connectors.
(Gold plated connectors are available in the same sizes too.)
There’s no use in replacing trimmers if the power supply isn’t 100% anyways

Best of luck.

Hey Kevin,
The part in question is either the Bourns 3299 100k LC “w”, or the Bournes 3296 100k LC “w”…and the magazine you can get from Mouser or Digi-Key has them for pretty cheap. But I agree with you, I just had my power supply modified by a pro, and it works like a dream now (except for one of the range pots). If you can get those Pots for less money than I can, I would like to add you as a supplier of those Potentiometers to my site…would that be ok? Also Kevin, you would be a great asset to the little yahoo group. Maybe you could join and find a minute or two from time to time (in between synth repairs) to share tips and methods for those who will be doing their own repair. Perhaps you could post on the Yahoo group tips for the power supply upgrade and modification?
Thanks for the advice (Kevin is a pro…BTW).

The 3299 has been replaced by the 3296X.
At least through Mouser.
Basically the same trimmers, but the 3299 and 3296X are slightly wider.

I don’t have a source for the MM panel pots, though I admit I’ve never tried looking. I do have one last MM here though and could check.

Thanks for the invite to the Yahoo group, but I spend about 1/4 of my time answering emails as it is.
While I understand that sometimes even the smallest shred of info can be a godsend to someone in need, far too often I am irked by seeing completely unqualified people attempt service on their own synths. While they’re not my synths, the pattern usually is: Broken synth → DIY attempt → Worse Broken Synth → Cries for help
While most people wouldn’t attempt their own surgeries, dentistry or even car repairs, for some odd reason many assume electronics is easy and that experience can be replaced with a schematic and assumptions. Many think they’ll save money too, which is fairly naive.

Thanks though and good luck.

Hey,
thanks for the trimpot help. I have pretty much found the one that is used in the MM, it is the bourns 3296w, which is a little thinner and newer than the old 3299 (according to bourns tecnical support).
I think I am like Luke Skywalker when he says to Yoda:
“I’m not afraid”, and then Yoda says “You will be…YOU WILL BE.”
But then look how impressed Anakin was when he saw that Luke had made his own light sabre. If Luke can do it, I can do it too…Although I burned out most of my medichlorians in the 80s.

Well best of luck.

My saying is “What you know might help you, but what you don’t know is what will bite you”
