Actually it may work, but not exactly in a safe manner.
In the US, normal single phase 110VAC power, the black wire is hot and the white wire is neutral. Normally the power fuse in the instrument is in the hot line and if a fault occurs in the power supply, the fuse will blow and disconnect the hot line from the instrument. If the hot and neutral lines are swapped, then there may be more of a chance the fuse could not protect you if there is a fault in the power supply.
OK the Taurus came from Australia where black is for neutral but since there are white and green wires you´ll see the only code with this colour combination is the american where black is for live. There are no brown, blue, not even green AND yellow wires. Almost for certain the Taurus was imported from the States (where else) and replugged by the local importer.
And if you´re so concerned with safety your british plug must be already fused with a 3A or so. No matter which wire carries live it will already be fused before it reaches the Taurus.
If you want things done right, just take their advice. Reverse the wires and stop worrying.
Edit - Here´s another proof: if you look at most Euro plugs you´ll see they will work one way or the other. You can switch polarities at random, the transformer and the rectifier bridge will handle the situation.
