I have had my Sub Phatty now for about two weeks. Every time I play it I fall in love with it more; very deep little synth! I own a pretty large modular in MOTM format and I am impressed with the functionality available within the Sub Phatty.
I have a suggestion for a companion module for the Sub: a stand-alone box like the CP-251 but housing an oscillator, essentially a replica of OSC 2 on the Sub but without sync. It would have MIDI in so that it could be driven by the Sub’s keyboard and audio out. This could be plugged into the Ext Audio of the Phatty for 3 oscillator (Minimoog and Voyager) type sounds, but it could also be plugged into the CV in’s for audio-rate modulations.
I can (and do) use my modular for this, but I can’t travel with my modular and the oscillators, while excellent, are not a dup of the Sub’s.
Stellar idea, but I’m afraid the Sub Phatty is not capable of audio rate modulation on the pitch CV in. It stops responding to the modulation after a certain point (I’m guessing 1000k - the LFO’s max rate) . Filter CV modulation is also weird because the Sub only responds to positive voltage (0v to +5v) on it’s CV ins, though it does not seem to be limited in terms of its resolution.
FWIW, I’m using a Doepfer Dark energy in almost the exact way you’re describing for the extra Osc. I’m still a little bummed about the CV resolution, though.
So I dug out my old Paia Fat Man - just what the doctor ordered. MIDI from the SP, audio out from thE FM into the Ext Audio in of the SP. Three oscillators (actually four, FM HAS TWO) sounds bitchin’! I’ll put up a small demo soon…still would like a third SP oscillator, though.
Not exactly what you described (no midi etc.), but how about a Moogerfooger MF-107 Freqbox? When syncing to the input signal, I’ve found it tracks mono synths pretty well (alot better than basses/guitars etc.), plus it has it’s own quirks and CV connections, including an envelope out..
Thanks, she’s my Baby I built it over a period of roughly five years starting in early 2000 or so. Then 2008 came, and I had to sell a bit of it. Now she’s expanding again. I particularly like MOTM’s oscillators (the most stable analog oscillators until the Sub Phatty) and their selection of filters, particularly the 440. I have Blacet, Oakley, CGS, Cyndustries and others in there too.
Someone was asking about acquiring modular elements to use with the Sub Phatty. That’s a BIG question and really a matter of personal preference but I have to say that modules like the MOTM Quad LFO and Blacet’s Binary Zone will get you quite a bit of interesting CV!
