Sub37 Editor Wish List Item

Don’t know if this is possible or feasible but I thought I’d throw it out there:

It would be really neat to be able to see a graphical representation view of the CV signal being input into any of the Sub37’s CV inputs. I’m using the Sub37 with a CP-251, so some of the waveform signals can get quite interesting  . I think that having this view would provide a great visual feedback of the current CV signal. Basically, your “X” axis would be “Time” and your “Y” axis would be “Voltage”.

Could this be done?

Thanks!

There’s really not enough bandwidth to run a real-time oscilloscope display from those inputs. Aside from the fact that main the processor is rather busy being a Sub 37, all the data would have to be streamed from the main board to the front-panel, which are two different systems, and the connection between them wasn’t designed for that kind of traffic.

Cool idea though! I’m generally in favor of more scope displays on more things.

Hi Amos,

I was really thinking about a “lo-fi” approach for a CV graph instead of a true, real-time oscilloscope. I know nothing about MIDI programming or the internal operation of the Sub37, so if this sounds silly, please ignore  .

I’m assuming that the Editor “scans” the MIDI data stream so many times per second to get the physical position of various knobs, keys, and buttons from the Sub37. IF there is a way for the Sub37 to read the voltage of only one CV input (you’d select which one from the Editor), you could read the CV voltage only a few times per second and transmit this data in the MIDI stream. The Editor would then “interpolate” between the data points for the CV graph displayed in the Editor. This way you’d only be adding a few extra data points into the MIDI data stream per second (thereby conserving bandwidth) and letting the CPU of the host computer do the “heavy lifting”.

Obviously, if there’s no easy way to read the voltage from the main board and transfer this reading to main panel already built into the Sub37, we’re screwed  !

Just a thought. If this “lo-fi” approach isn’t feasible, no need to explain. Just a simple, “nope that won’t work either” is fine.

Don’t mean to distract you from the great work that you guys are doing on the Editor!

Would it be possible for the sequencer step number to light up when a sequence is playing to keep a visual eye on the sequence? I get a bit lost when running a long sequence  . Many thanks Glyn.
