[SPHE] Sub Phatty Editor 2.0.0b12 is ready to test

Hello beta group!

In the past weeks SPHE has gone through many changes and improvements. We updated SDK and JUCE, and fixed a lot of stability and GUI issues, so we expect it to be very stable at this point.

Before installing, backup your presets and remove the Sub Phatty “service” folder (presets are in that folder) as keeping it may cause v2.0.0b12 not to function properly. Once removed, please install the new version, sync presets to hardware and put back your user presets.

This folder can be found here:
OSX: /Library/Application Support/Moog Music inc./Sub Phatty
Windows: C:\Users<user>\AppData\Roaming\Moog Music Inc\Sub Phatty

Fixes:

  • All Sonar issues should be solved by now (please confirm)
  • VST3 GUI corrupt in collapsed mode in Bitwig/OSX: VST3 is fixed, VST2 is expected to be fixed in next Bitwig version
  • LFO RANGE, WAVE MOD DEST, GLIDE TYPE third position doesn’t work
  • Local Folder / Hardware selection fixed
  • Graphic artifacts may appear in Cubase 5 / Windows 7
  • Hardware presets list not populated, presets can’t be switched from Editor
  • Factory and User libraries are not generated since new JUCE update
  • Two “service” folder created upon initialization of SPHE since new JUCE update
  • Gibberish text is shown on preset list when used as a plugin
  • Changing GUI mode, graphics is not smooth
  • Performance sluggish in PT12
  • User can “Export Bank” when no SPHE is connected
  • GUI corruption in Windows
  • Editor may load in a half sized window in full mode, Studio One
  • Cubase 5 hangs when loading SPHE VST the first time
  • Artifacts may show up for a short moment when switching from full to half size GUI
  • Editor freezes in StudioOne since 2.0.0b10

Please let us know if your reported issues are gone by now, and of any issue that may arise.

Thanks for your cooperation !

IMPORTANT: You must first check for the current SPH firmware version by loading the Editor and looking at the firmware version number in the PREF page. If it says 2.x, you can install the new firmware. If it’s 1.x, please check for your unit’s serial number. If it’s #2892 or lower, DO NOT update your Sub Phatty firmware, as it requires also updating the bootloader.

Windows Drivers:
v4.35.0 (Windows 7 and up): http://www.moogconnect.net/downloads/subphatty/Moog_Sub_Phatty_USB_Driver_v4.35.0.zip
v2.23.0 (Vista or XP): http://www.moogconnect.net/downloads/subphatty/Moog_Sub_Phatty_USB_DriverSetup_v2.23.0.zip
*Please note the driver should be installed only once upgrading the firmware.

NOTE: With the new dedicated driver for the Minitaur posted, there is no need anymore of the generic moog USB driver and it should be removed/uninstalled. Please uninstall any existing generic moog driver from “Programs and Features” (Control Panel), and manually delete the files “moogusbmidi_x64.sys” and “moogusbmidiks_x64” from “Windows\system32\drivers”, before installing this driver.

Updating the firmware:

  1. Connect your Sub Phatty to your computer using a USB cable. Connect it directly, and not using any USB hub.
  2. Turn the Sub Phatty on. Push HARD SYNC and PITCH AMT and while holding them both, push ACTIVE PANEL twice. If you push it only once, the update won’t work.
  3. LFO RATE indicator should blink slowly. This means that the Phatty is now ready to receive the new firmware.
  4. Load the C6 sysex program.
  5. Configure C6 midi ports so they point to Sub Phatty In/Out (“CONFIG”)
  6. Load the firmware syx file into C6 (“LOAD”)
  7. Mark the syx file by clicking it once, and then click “SEND”
  8. MIDI LED should now flash slowly. If it flashes very fast it means that the Phatty receives midi, but not updating the firmware. In this case turn the Phatty off and back on, and repeat the 3-button push scenario.
  9. Once the update completes, the Phatty should restart itself automatically. That means the new firmware is now updated.
  10. Run the Sub Phatty Editor and check for the firmware version by clicking on “PREF”. It should now say 2.1.12. If it says anything other than “2.1.12”, it means that the firmware is not successfully updated, and you need to repeat the process again.

Installing the Windows driver:

  1. Power off your Sub Phatty and disconnect its USB cable
  2. In case you do not have any Minitaur in your system, uninstall any existing generic moog USB driver and manually delete the files moogusbmidi_x64.sys and moogusbmidiks_x64 from Windows\system32\drivers. Do NOT remove any existing Sub 37 drivers.
  3. Restart your computer
  4. Power on the Sub Phatty, connect the USB cable and let Windows auto-detect and install the default SPH driver. This may take a few minutes so be patient.
  5. Once detected, install the new Sub Phatty driver. The installer should load two popup windows, asking to confirm the driver components. Mark the checkboxes in those popups, and let it complete. If asked by the installer to disconnect and reconnect the cable, please do so.
  6. Restart your computer
  7. Check your Device Manager settings. There should be separate entries for the Sub Phatty, and also the Sub 37, in case one is present in your system. The entries should appear under the root tree, with no exclamation mark in them.
  8. Open the Editor, click the PREF button and select “moog Sub Phatty In/Out” from the Midi Input and Output menus. To sync all preset, click the GET button.

I use a Mac and the above instructions are not 100% clear to me. My presets are under ~/Library/Application Support/Moog Music Inc./Sub Phatty/Presets Library. Is that what is meant by the “service” folder? I don’t have a folder named “service” anywhere under ~/Library/Application Support/Moog Music inc./Sub Phatty.

Yes. “Service” or “Preferences”, same folder:

~/Library/Application Support/Moog Music Inc./Sub Phatty

Indeed, it seems that you must erase that folder if you want the Editor to work fine

I had trouble because I didn’t do it when I installed it for the first time. Then I wiped it completely (using Ccleaner in windows) as well as erasing the folder. Then it worked.
Hopefully the final release won’t need this? Many users don’t read instructions or manuals and this might become a big problem if they have to do it

I’ve been using it during the weekend, and the standalone version didn’t run at least once. I had to force the software to close (since its window never showed up) and open it a second time. As a plugin I’ve had no problems.
I suspect that Chrome might be responsible, since I know that for some time now it steals MIDI ports and there is no easy way to deactivate them.

If I am able to find a way to easily reproduce the problem I will post it here, and if it doesn’t happen again during this week, I will say so as well

The release version is planned not to require the manual deleting of the service folder.

Interesting, I didn’t see it here. Does it still happen after restarting your OS?

Oh, do you mean I should remove ~/Library/Application Support/Moog Music Inc./Sub Phatty completely? I thought I needed to remove a folder called Service or Preferences in that folder.

Yes. Don’t forget to first copy your library folders from within this folder as a backup to your custom presets.

So this weekend I installed this latest version and it really crashed Cubase hard on launch twice and I couldn’t even get Cubase open.

I uninstalled it and then reinstalled the version before this and everything was fine again.

I am going to test it again and see if I get the same results.

So far, all these betas were fine and never crashed Cubase like this. This version (2.0.0b12), however, did.

I will try it again and report back. It’s possible it was something else but the only change on my machine was this SPE version.

Did you delete the preferences folder as instructed, prior to running this new version?

It is happening again, the stand alone editor doesn’t open. Even by forcing it to close and trying to open it again it doesn’t.
I suspect it does this after hibernation.

It does work after a Windows 7 restart, yes

I moved ~/Library/Application Support/Moog Music Inc./Sub Phatty elsewhere before installing 2.0.0.b12 and noticed that the newly created directories and files are owned by the root user instead of the user owning this home directory. I think it is bad practice to create folders/files in a user’s home directory owned by the root user. All other directories and files in my ~/Library directory are owned by my username, except for the Moog ones.

ahh, missed that

Followed those instructions and everything worked fine!

Thanks for the note. Will pass that on.

Sorry took a while to get time to test this but seems fine on both Live 9 and Cubase 9.

On a side note I acquired some Audeze LCD-XCs recently and they put the SP in a whole new light
