Sorry, not Moog related - The Who/Baba O'Riley

Sorry, it’s not Moog related, but I figured you guys would know best. How the hell did The Who get that sound on Baba O’Riley from Who’s Next?

Well, there’s lots of arguements about it, but I think this guy has it right: http://members.madasafish.com/~r_rowley/page3.html

I’ve been able to nail this sound with my Prophet '08. I use the same sound, but split the keyboard. In the left hand, I program the sequence, and in the right hand, I use the arpeggiator to get the fast repeated notes. Works and sounds great.

Sometimes I check out really old posts like this one… you never know, they could prove to have valuable information, or offer some insight to something still relevant…

The page no longer exists.

Different song, but try this:

I’ve made synth programs for Baba O’Riley, Won’t Get Fooled Again, and Eminence Front
on almost every synth I’ve ever owned. But here’s a video showing how to at least
roughly emulate these effects with a very cool delay pedal:

That is a lowrey tbo-1 organ I believe. I can’t remember the model number. I think it’s the banjo setting. It has an automated arpeggiator thing and that’s what it is. If you have ever played that organ it sounds exactly like it immediately. You can find them now and then for really cheap. I passed one up for $100.

Pete townsend used a hammond M3 throught a EMS VCS3. Later on tour he used an M3 through an ARP 2600.

I think that you’re confusing that for “Won’t get fooled again.” Here’s a link

I’ve got a simple ‘Won’t get fooled again’ patch on Knob tweak for the ext input. Play your Hammond through it!

This is correct. Not a synth. Those who don’t believe haven’t heard the Lowrey organ.

Or haven’t owned a 2600 or a VCS3. You only have to play that organ for a second and it’s immediately it.

correct you are . it is wont get fooled again, sorry i did not read it properly. must be old age. well any way youtube does have a clip from pete himself. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5voNyRmvXs&feature=PlayList&p=4FE61BDB650FB3C6&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=8. i will use my reading glasses next time and it does look like he used lowrey organ organ in the youtube clip

It’s an ARP 2500. Pete owned one with both the wing cabinets and also a 2600.

Lots of famous “synth” tracks of The Who are not synths at all, although Pete is well-versed in synthesis.

He calls the Lowrey organ the “Berkshire” which is indeed the model name on that TB0-1 organ. It did the Baba track.

Same organ processed through the VCS-3 made “Fooled Again”.

Eminence Front is the Yamaha Electone organ.

“Who Are You” is fuzz guitar into the ARP2600 (not the 2500, which he also had) with filtration and ringmod.

Its a lowrey though an ems S&H setting. Look up video on youtube, he gives a demonstration and actually improvises on it. But he uses a 2600 in the video, which sounds just as good.

You’re not talking about Baba O’Reilly because that’s just the organ.

Nope organ through sample and hold on EMS VCS3 and in the video, he uses arp 2600 instead, but definitely S&H

Pete, on the organ sound for Won’t Get Fooled Again and Baba O’Riley:

I used gated Lowrey organ via EMS VCS3 gated filter. No sequencer. I got my ARP 2500 system (huge) just after I’d recorded the first few demos for Who’s Next. Baba O’Riley was a cheat. I couldn’t get the sequencers and mix-sequencers on the ARP under my fingers fast enough so I emulated sequencing and tape delays using the Marimba Arpeggiator effect on my Lowrey Berkshire.
