Looks similar to electroplating but with patterns and no wires. Although the parts to be printed on, visibly have some type of pre-coating (possibly statically charged).

Another cool thing awaiting us is 3D printers, in a couple of years… Imagine being able to print your own Moog knobs (actually made by Cosmo).

I’ve felt real Cosmo knobs and knock-offs side by side and you could tell which were original bakelite and which were plastic.
Something to do with temperature absorption or whatever, but it was noticeable immediately.

It reminds me of this special Easter Egg dye I had as a kid, Ruby’s:

Sort of an oily/polymer something in different colors in some sweet rabbit head bottles. You’d put drops in the water and it would form an oil slick on the surface of the water and when you dipped the egg in it would stick to it.
