Setting up Phatty / VST with Ableton

Wow, this one has stumpted me completely. Had the slim (which is gorgeous) for a few weeks now but still can’t get everything playing nicely together which is very frustrating since the VST isn’t cheap.

Where I want to get to:
Use the AU/VST to load / save patches
Play and record midi data without any nasty midi loops (managed to do this without the VST by turning off local control but want to use the VST so I can save patches).

Every time I try and load patches the Phatty goes haywire and playing mutiple notes - not sure if it’s loaded the patches or not. The Rekon audio talks about creating ‘virtual mid connects etc’. I’ve had a go but i’ve absolutely no idea what i’m doing.

Does any kind soul have / willing to create a youtube vid / step by step screen shots of how to do the set up in Ableton on a mac, there seems to be people all over the net tearing their hair about about this. Ideally a video should step through the whole process from setting up any virtual mdi stuff on the mac, setting up different midi / audio channels and then demonstrate loading banks / patches and playing / recording continuous data.

My set up:
Ableton live 8
OXS 10.7.4
USB midi external keyboard
Midisport 2x2 (so plenty of spare midi in/out ports)

Yours hopefully.

If the patch load worked, then you should see the patch displayed in the Phatty display. Plus you will be able to hear it

Does the Phatty work OK with Live other than using the editor?

Does the Rekon editor work OK when used standalone outside Live?

Are you using the VST or AU version of the editor?

Are you connecting the Phatty via USB?

You can hear how the patch sounds after load here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHrrO1tmGJc&feature=youtu.be In the first half of the video the patch is playing fine. Once a new bank is loaded everything goes strange

Yes it does - firmware version 3.12

I don’t think I was offered a stand alone version - I purchased directly from the Moog website just the vst-au in the download not the stand alone version which is also a bit odd

I’ve tried both, more strangeness from the VST which I won’t go into at this point!

Yes

I use Live and a Mac but I can’t help you because I just sold my Phatty today

Anyway, the installer created a VST plugin, an AU plugin and a standalone version. The standalone is all I ever used and it worked perfectly. I just wanted to be able to back up patches and had bad experiences with SoundTower editors in the past.

I’d suggest you try it and see if it works. If it doesn’t then you have issues beyond the integration with Live!

You are loading sysex to the Phatty while it’s playing a sequence! Most synthesizers will at least glitch if you do that, some simply shut off the output during the dump. Remember, it’s hardware not a softsynth…the sysex data is sharing the MIDI connection with the notes which at least should cause some weird timing or outright corruption of either the note data or the sysex data.

Try loading a patch while the sequence is stopped. If you need to change sounds mid-sequence, pre-load all the patches you want to use and use program change messages to select them.

Yep you’re right. If you load bank whilst the sequencer is not running (then count to 10 before attempting to audition / play the new sound using the DAW) it generally works. Sometimes you have to switch the SP on an off to get rid of the glitches though.
