Rough and squeaky action on one of the keys.

I’ve noticed that the white A key above middle C in my LP Stage II has developed an annoying problem. When you press the key, you can feel rough resistance and it makes creaky mechanical noise even at the slightest touch. When you release the key, it’s the same.

I removed the keyboard to investigate the problem and it looks like the source of noise is near the spring, at the point where the key is hinged to the assembly. I didn’t remove the key as I’m not sure how to do it safely. I inserted a tiny metal object between the offending key and its neighbour. It helped for a couple of days but now the problem returned.

I’m going to remove the intrusive metal part from between the keys and get multipurpose lube that is safe on plastic from Maplin (I’m in the UK). Has anyone had a similar problem? Is there anything I should be wary of? Thanks for advice.

Sounds normal to me…my keys creak all the time, some more than others. And different ones creak as the seasons change. I live with it…it’s part of the inferior keybed Moog uses to save money.

Yeah, My Stage II is certainly among my favorite synths, but worst keybed of all my synths. It is afterall, the poorman’s Moog.

Unfortunately that is the way the Little Phatty keys are. I have a Stage II and it has a replaced keybed in it. The first one I had Moog Music replace the 1st week I had it because of scrapping and clicking noises. The second one also has one key that does it, which is my lowest key, and a few others are pretty clicky two. I try to live with it but it does bother me because I play synths/keys. None of my other synths (most of which are Japanese) are like that go figure. Too bad the keys are not better. I’d pay a little more too! The keyboard is my instrument and I really do want good quality and feel in my keys without annoying clicks and scrapping sounds that you can hear over headphones in the studio.

Thanks for input. I’m a synth/keyboard player too and it is a big problem for me. Especially that I have a comparison with a lovely DX7 keyboard under my Moog.

I’m not going to accept this as it is. Will try the lube, if it doesn’t work, I’ll think of modding the keys to improve the quality. I’ve found some useful info about a very similar keyboard here: http://www.proaudioe.com/pages/nord-tech-support-usa/keybeds.php

Problem fixed  I managed to remove the offending key and it looked like there were some plastic leftovers from the manufacturing process in the pivot/hinge area of the key. I carefully carved the extra plastic from inside of the key so that the key looks exatly like it should now. I applied some lube as well. Now it works smoothly and quietly like the rest of the keys.

I think I’m lucky as my keyboard isn’t as bad as described above. Except that single key that gave me the problem, it feels rather nice for a monosynth. I’ve got the latest revision with black side panels.

Cool, let us know what you come up with!
