Dear moog music,
please send Matt Sharp of the Rentals (1) Moog Voyager for sponsorship. You may reach him at his address on the website.
Yeah, I just heard about that this morning…
I did my happy dance…
listened to their two albums…
then dreamed about what the new sound will be…will there even be moogs?
There must be moogs!!!
Though I know Matt Sharp did have one of his Source’s stolen…
ps. Don’t forget they used an Opus 3 on both of their albums
woohoooo!
True stories of the Rentals…
Tom Grimly really should get TONS of credit for his production on the first Rentals LP, putting together a good band that was the first line up with people like Petra Haden AND turning Matt on to Moog syntheisizers.
Matt’s original idea was for the Rentals to be more guitar based and he asked Tom Grimly to help him with the demos he had been working on. Tom was a cool local engineer that funded his studio doing slave labor by working on the second Tone Loc record. He would record tons of local LA bands in the early 90’s such as Slug, Pressurehead, Geraldean Fibbers, that dog, and even Beck. His studio was called Poop Alley. After the first Weezer record hit Matt was eager to put out his own songs out and contacted Tom.
Short story is Tom really crafted that first album. Matt takes all the credit with all the “Weezer Power” and squeezes Tom out of the picture on the next recording(maybe that’s why the second was so week).
rejoice is right! i posted almost the exact same subject line at a few other messageboards i frequent earlier this week. when i heard this news, i immediately had to spread the good word. i’m a giant rentals fan. Theyre definately one of my biggest ‘moog influences’. I feel like most of my favorite bands are broken up and to have the rentals to spring back to life is just what i needed.
it is exciting. This should be the year they release a new album and tour. I have a feeling a rogue will be used as well as the classic source on the new album. Check them out if you arent familar…good stuff
I sold my Source about 4 years ago to someone who was a Rentals fanatic. Since he kept bringing them up, I checked out their music. Seems like a lot of bands that came afterwards were influenced by their sound.
