Recapping Model D + Noisy pots

I am at a semi-amateur level for soldering, etc. How hard is it to recap the Model D? Obviously I am still practicing to get better and when I feel comfortable I will start the work but what do you guys say, how difficult is it in general?

My primary reason for wanting to replace the capacitors is because I noticed this phenomenon:
I enable Noise osc., and it becomes audible after 2 seconds. I guess it’s the “Warm up” time for it to start. Also the main output takes about 10 seconds to work.

I also have noising pots for the Osc 1 volume, Filter cutoff, Main volume, and a few others that I do not remember. What would be the best solution for the problem?

i’d say , don’t go soldering on a mini unless you’re good at it. it’s like varnishing a stadivarius without knowing all the ins and outs…

Recapping is unlikely to fix the problems you are having. Noisy pots means the resistive elements on the pots are going bad and they need to be replaced. The other problems require a competent tech to identify the offending component(s), best to get it fixed in person.

FWIW, my Mini had noisy pots when I got it, from having been stored for too long and not having been played for 20 years. I found out that simply by turning them for one end to the other several tens of times, the scratchiness went away.

Thanks for the replies.

I also noticed this problem: the frequency modulation switch needs a hard push to be switched on. By this I mean to push it with the right pressure to switch it on. I guess it will need replacement, any thoughts?

And yes thealien, it seems the previous owner had it in storage for sometime but played it occasionally. It will have a lot more playing time with me

Same thing with the switches: probably dirty or oxidized from prolonged storage. The pots are sealed, but the switches are not. You can spray some contact cleaner in there from the back. But you’ll have to remove the 4 boards inside in order to reach them. So while you have the boards removed, might as well clean the boards contacts and connectors too…

Or you can sent it to a qualified tech that will do all that for you.
