i just received this beast several days ago and it was working obscenely well. then, within 8 hours, the second oscillator died. i opened it up and saw the grotesque foam that plagues these things thankfully still attached to the body of the keyboard and not the circuit board. i then proceeded to put on my gloves and clean the thing out thoroughly. i inspected the soldering points on the back of the board and saw absolutely nothing amiss. the slider that controls the volume of the second oscillator seems to be the culprit. what can i do to make sure that this is the problem? i don’t really want to pay somebody to diagnose and fix it for the “convenient” and “competitive” price of $200+. please try to help me without suggesting i cop out and give it to some technician. i am somewhat competent with soldering and i have an introductory level knowledge of electronics. thanks in advance.

Chip for Brains last sale was only days ago.
Unless he told you he’s out business, you might consider finding the patience to wait for him to relist items.
Saying on a forum that someone is “no longer doing business” is a great way to start a rumor that hurts someone’s business.
I would also not suggest you cop out and spend money for a pro.
All pros are here just to take your money and insult your knowledge, after all.
On the contrary- I’d suggest fixing it yourself to avoid competitive techs and all the inconvienance you’d surely have to go through.
forgive my tone, but it honestly seems like a cut and dry kind of problem. electronic technicians are infamous for over charging and i feel very confident in my ability to get the job done. this is not a minimoog and really doesn’t warrant more than $50 plus parts worth of work. does anyone have experience with this kind of problem? is it more likely that the problem is the oscillator itself and not the volume slider?
You will need the service manual. It has a trouble shooting section that should get you started.

Good luck! And let us know how you make out. I have one I have not worked on yet, has the same one osc symptom. Too busy working on those old 900 series Moog modules.

You do, of course realize that Kevin Lightner is one of the most respected synth restorers/techs around, right? I would pay him whatever he charged to get something repaired/modded with the knowledge that it would be done right, and knowing that he has the skill and experience that it takes to properly repair a synth. Also all work would be backed by a warranty. What warranty do you offer to yourself if you were to screw something else up while fixing OSC. 2?
thank you, CZ rider, for providing me with the service manual.
i apologize to Kevin Lightner for semi-bashing electronic techs (i am an electronic tech in training, actually). i have just had a LOT of bad luck with electronic repair shops in the past and i really don’t want to get burned with another repair bill that could have easily been used to buy another keyboard. i also have an ulterior motive in not wanting to give the thing up to a professional tech: i want the satisfaction of knowing i fixed it myself. of course, there is always the possibility that i’ll screw it up even further, but i’m willing to take my chances.
oh my god! i had no idea that that service manual would be so fantastically in depth! it’s an electronics student’s wet dream! thank you so much for that link. my problem was dealt with on page 25. i will keep you posted on how i come along.
I switched out all the sliders in my mg1.. Super easy, and i suggest you do it.. That will give you a good chance to REALLY clean everything and I bet when you are all done it will work great, like mine did…
Just make sure you put em in really straight and well connected/soldered…
Our MG has a pretty audible hiss/noise, but it is SUCH an important part of our sound.. We NEVER use the oscs at all though (dont hate), we use it exclusively for the “Polyphony” through the modulating filter!! That is our signature VPO sound on all most every song (along with tons o’ other moogs, min, MMv, Phatty)
Anway, love that thing…
