Question about preset tuning: The 8ve and 4th to 5th

There’s something I noticed in my new LP, and I’m wondering if it’s normal or if I should do some tweaking.

There are two presets where I assume (based on the names) that the Mod wheel is supposed to sweep to a particular tuning between Osc1 and Osc2: they’re called something like “The 8ve” and “4th to 5th”. When I play these and open the mod wheel all the way, the intervals are quite a bit wider than the names (about a ninth and a sixth). Is it that way on everyone’s LP? I figure I can tune the top of the range with the Amount control, but before I do I’m just curious if this is the way the patches were intended to be.

P.S. I’ve already run the Osc 2 calibration, and that’s fine because when I manually tune Osc 2 it goes to exactly a 5th above and below Osc 1.

71 - MOD THEOCTAVE - Mod wheel bends osc 2 up 1 oct.
77 - FORTH TO 5TH - Osc 2 is tuned up a 4th and Mod wheel bends it up a whole step.

That’s how these presets are on my LP SE. With the Mod wheel pegged I only had to tweak the Modulation Amount control a tiny bit to get them in tune. Curious, why they’re so far out on yours.

Yeah, it did seem a little odd. But everything else is sounding fine and calibrated, so I guess I’ll just tweak and save and forget about it.

Welcome to the world of analog gear my young apprentice

Buahahahahaha… (laughter from the depths of hell

erm, yes… my bad; I wrote those presets. Little did I know at the time that the LP on which I wrote the patches had a little more than the usual amount of variance in the modulation bus amount… so they don’t sound exactly the same on all LPs. This is par for the course with analogue, though; the mod bus is generally within 5% tolerance from any one LP to another, but when you rely on the mod bus amount for precise oscillator tuning, you always run the risk that it won’t be tuned exactly the same on a different LP. Tweaking the mod amount to suit your instrument and re-saving the patch is exactly what to do.

Cheers,

Amos

Thanks Amos … It only took about 10 sec. to adjust, and now sounds properly wicked

Playing around with MOD THEOCTAVE preset, I learned there’s more to it than what I wrote above. I’m probably the last one to have figured it out, but thought I’d set the record straight

Filter Env modulates Pitch. Advancing the Mod Wheel raises the Osc’s up an octave. But the other thing that’s going on is Mod Dest. 2, which is assigned to OSC2. This effectively doubles the mod voltage going to Osc2. As Osc1 bends up one octave, Osc2 bends up two octaves. Clever patch, Amos.
