Phatty problems (never throught it would happen)

Cranked up my Tribute last night, let 'er warm up then started playing.

My favorite preset which is just popping (usually) is “00 THANK YOU BOB” and Hoedown is usually my go-to riff to get warmed up.

Well after a minute or two (following good hr. of warm up), I sensed something wrong.

Sounds as if the filter is moving on me, the popp’in sound is now getting thin and coarse sounding, not smooth. I first thought that one of the OSCs was out of whack so I compared them to each other with level at 0/full and full/0 on selected waveforms. No issues there. If I move to anothe preset then back to “00” all is good again for a brief spell.

This patch uses Filter as mod destination and I noticed if I move to Wave, the sound is much better. My initial thought is that my mod wheel is out of calibration. Haven’t had enough time to play with it to get to the bottom of it but wanted to ask if anybody else had issues such as this?

I’ve had this for almost 2 years and it was just serviced last summer with 2.0 upgrade, CV out mod and full calibration.

Thanks.

you might try setting the mod destination to Filter, turning both oscillator levels down, then turn the resonance all the way up and set the filter cutoff to some medium frequency that you can hear well. Now experiment with different mod sources and turning the mod wheel up and down. The idea is that it should be very easy for you to hear any changes in the frequency of the self-oscillating filter, which will tell you if all mod sources are working and if the mod wheel is able to reduce modulation all the way to zero when the wheel is at minimum. If there are any issues, you ought to be able to hear them in this way, I hope. Also, you might ought to try running all the calibrations on the Calibration menu (master menu, system utilities, calibration) and see if the sound is improved thereby. Check the latest manual (free pdf download if you need it) appendices for calibration instructions.

Cheers!

Interesting timing. Upgrade my Tribute to 2.23T today [thx for the help]; and calibrated; problem solved.

I did some more poking around after speaking with Ryan. Surely it had something to do with frequencies / beating which are just slightly offset (2070 as THANK YOU BOB is set). Shift it down to 2048 in precision mode and it’s fine. It wasn’t your grandfather’s beating, was something obscure and most noticeable with Filter as MOD dest. Definately was drifting every 5 seconds or so. If it rears it’s head again, I’ll see about taking your recommendation verbatim.

And yes, the 2.20 manual is handy to have there, thx (to Greg?) for getting that. We usually don’t see full manuals for interim release of code. Now get that Taurus Arp put in, the step sequencer, and the 50 other things that you’ve been slacking on…
