phaser stereo output

I’ve recently started using the phaser with the stereo out and have noticed that the right output (which is the regular main output) has a higher output than the left output. I noticed changing the resonance seems to affect the balanc as well.

Is this normal? If so, could someone please explain why please explain why?

Thanks

I noticed something similar when I had a MF-103 and I never found anything to do about it other than to affect the balance from my mixer. I’d be curious what people have to say about that one.

A Phaser produces peaks and dips in the frequency spectrum. The AUX output has peaks in the frequency response at the same points where there are dips in the MAIN output. The AUX output is also bandwidth limited, low and high frequencies are rolled off, that’s why it sounds like it has less output than the MAIN. The MAIN/AUX pair used in stereo are designed to create a rotary effect in the stereo field.

Hello,

The MF-103 was originally a modular synth component and was probably not designed as true stereo device. The aux out provides stereo effects,
but is exactly what it’s name states.

Thanks for your response. I always thought that the aux just inverted the signal coming out of the main. I must have missed the part about the highs and lows being rolled off in the manual.

Thanks again.

Trice

The few times that I’ve experimented with using both outputs from the MF-103 I wasn’t too happy with the results - I much prefer just using the main output, but that’s just me…

Actually, come to think about it, for recording I don’t like using stereo effects at all! I prefer recording stuff in mono and then panning stuff manually in protools.

The fuzz drone on this track is the MF-103 - the phasered part in five is actually a Blue Lagoon “Parallel-Phase”: gorinto (five-storied pagoda)

i usually run the phaser in mono as well but recently was asked to do some moogy work in surround. I took it as an opportunity to get a little stoopid with the outputs of my MFs. My signal flow ended up being the mono output of the voyager multed into two Murfs, the phaser and my space echo with eight total inputs into Protools. (1 voyager, 4 Murfs, 2 phaser, 1 in space. . .) I was able to sync the rate on the two murfs to the LFO of the voyager, each having a different pattern (but still resolving), which was a lot of fun.

ezratrice - did it really end up being in surround sound or just spread through the stereo continuum? Can you post a short sample?

both.
i ended up submitting the songs in surround and stereo for the show it was to be used for. it is a documentary about the real lives of ex sports figures. we are working with HBO and are hoping it will get picked up.
I’m not allowed right now to post the songs due to the way the deal was set up but I will post some of the work that we decided not to submit.
I think I can encode the surround mixes in the new quicktime 7 format. would that work for you. i have not done it before but read that it is possible.

I’m not that advanced! I actually own a TV that’s not only not stereo - it’s not mono either! It’s only the right channel! Really annoying for watching DVDs…

Actually my computer’s not that archaic - it can handle stereo  So yeah, post some stuff off the cutting room floor!
