I’m confused about the different models…
I’m trying to decide;
buy a (new) Performer Edition or a (new) Electric Blue. Same price.
Store even throws in a CP251 with the PE… OR
I can buy a (second hand) AE, with a walnut finish. That one has only 1 bank of sounds and no backlighting, according to the current owner.
Can somebody tell me what’s the difference in specs between a Performer Edition and a “normal” Edition? Or are all Voyagers Performer E’s ?
I might go for the AE, send it to Moog for the memory upgrade.
First of all, what prices are you talking about?
The EB would be nice if you like that color scheme.
THe Performer is the “normal edition”.
The Anniversary is a special limited edition performer with a special cabinet. More collectible in the long run too.
THe select series just has a choise of cabinets and color of backlighting.
I would either go for the Performer and CP 251 cause thats a nice combo or the Anniversary Edition, but I need to know what prices you are talking about. The condition of the AE factors in too.
If you are a super Moog buff, the AE is your choise. If you are just looking for the best bang for your buck, the PE and CP is the way to go.
Depending on who they are, you might can get them to substitute the CP 251 for another Fooger like the ring mod or the Phaser or pay a little extra and get the Freqbox, depending on how you want to haggle.
The difference is merely cosmetic. The wood will either have a different finish and/or there will be a backlit panel and lit modwheels. PE’s have natural wood, no backlit panel, and no lit modwheels. Older ones need to be upgraded for the extra banks and better aftertouch. Select series have different cabinet finishes and their panels have different colored lights.
I have never heard of an AE that has a natural wood panel and no backlit panel. That just sounds like the basic PE. AE’s have a 50th Anniversary badge on the right side panel of the base and their serial number begins with the letters AE. They usually are black. They would need all the upgrades due to the period they were released. I love mine. I just have the memory upgrade.
It certainly has the AE badge. I can’t tell by the picture or the language if it has a backlit panel or not. The panel looks just like mine when not turned on. The cabinet looks nice. It is very possible that some ordered the AE with a natural wood finish. That one looks great. I personally like the backlit panel, because it comes in handy when performing in dark places. Plus it just looks cool.
The AE will cost a little more to be upgraded, but that might not be important to you. The AE and PE both sound and operate identically. A new PE or EB will have a warranty.
From what I can tell from the Voyager Product Page on the Moog website, they were an extra add on…for a while. Then, they became a standard option. If such a thing can exist. They only come in blue, from what I can tell. Anyone is welcome to prove me wrong in any statement in this post, as I don’t have a Voyager.
The Anniversary edition was initially introduced with a black cabinet,
back-lighting (including lit wheels), and the 50 Ann. badge. Most of the
units have the black cabinet however, before the series was discontinued,
Moog Music offered some additional wood choices (including oak) by request.
The number of these within the Anniversary line is probably
far fewer than the black cabinet models.
Also, when the Anniversary edition was in production, Signature edition
and Performer edition owners were offered the option to have their
Vgers changed over to Anniversary editions, but the catch was that they
lost their existing serial numbers from their edition of origin and had to
have the numbers changed over an Anniversary edition serial number.
Few people (if any) with Signature editions opted for this.
The base Performer had non-illuminated wheels, with lighted as an option.
Dazz, as for the unit in the pic, I’m not sure about the non-illuminated panel. iirc, even the changeover Vgers
got the illuminated panel, so I’m not sure why that wouldn’t have the backlit panel, but the badge and lit wheels. Anyone??..
Isn’t it so that any Voyager with a back-lit panel - be it factory- or retro-fitted - has a little knob on the right side of the keyboard?
And this knob trims the level of the backlight?
Theres a knob on the right hand side of the keyboard that acts as a rheostat for the lights.
Now I can’t tell from the picture if it actually says “Anniversary Edition” on the front of the cabinet because its distorted. I also seem to vaguely remember a post from a few years ago of someone who ordered an Anniversary Edition that came with no badge.
It could be a performer that has a badge, but I think thats potentially going too far to say that.
If it says Anniversary Edition on the front under the LED light and like already stated has a serial number that has AE on the thing AND a badge then chances are it is an anniversary edition.
Is that in belgium? If so then I can’t help you on the prices. I think we have an advantage living in the USA getting them for the prices that we do.
It is an interesting decision, Performer/CP 251 or Anniversary Edition. Right now Id be leaning towards the PE/CP until we can determine if thats an actual AE.
I am thinking that that is a converted Performer or a Performer with a 50th badge. On my Anniversary Edition the words “Anniversary Edition” are printed on a small black strip underneath the LCD Panel. It is just above the three LEDs. Also there is a black strip above the LCD and below “Voyager” that has “Analog Synthesizer.” This Voyager in the picture doesn’t have those. I think the only way to tell if this is an official AE is by the serial number.
Yes, the backlit panel is adjusted by a small knob which is located next to the last key on the right.
I received some pics on which I can see the words “Analog Synthesizer” above the LCD and below “Voyager”.
No “Anniversary Edition” printed anywhere.
The serial no, from what I can see in the pics, is 2168.
From that info and from what LWG said about serial numbers, I don’t believe that to be an AE. Is there a little knob next to the last key on the right for back lighting? If it doesn’t have a backlit screen, I think that would be proof enough that it is not an AE. Anniversary edition serial numbers (mine at least) begin begin with the letters “AE.”
Dazz, you will want the CP251. It creates and modulates control voltages which you can input into the back of your Voyager. You will be able to create many more sounds with it.
Don’t forget the 600 Signature Editions that were released. Like hell that you’ll get mine.
Main difference is that it has inspiration built in, in the form of Bob’s signature on the front that you can constantly look at while playing (and you aren’t distracted by some colorful backlights).
I’d rather have this one than any one with colorful lights or random colors of cases, and a huge patch memory. We have this thing called MIDI for a reason! Just Sysex dump with every song and you’re set. If you’re using more than 128 patches per song, you’re doing it wrong.
