I’m considering adding a MF to use with my Microkorg and I was wondering if anyone uses the MF’s with a digital synth. I’m considering the MF-101.
If anyone has soundclips I’d love to hear them to see what kind of results you are getting.
Also, as a side note, I also use an Akai MPC and a Korg ESX-1 sampler. I was also thinking of running my drums through the MF as well (prior to recording into a multi-track). So if you have drums/samples through any of the pedals I’d love to hear that too.
And, if anyone thinks the MF-101 is not a good choice for a first MF, please let me know. This would be my first Moog product.
Thanks. I’ve tried you tube, but didn’t see much for the mf-101…most stuff I’ve found online are clips of guitars and basses, so I was hoping to hear some examples of synths and drum machines.
I see that now…there are plenty of MF demos but not alot of lowpass. I don’t have one or I would throw up some demos for you. I do have a Frostwave Resonator which I use in some of my FreqBox and other demos at http://earsmack.com so you might check them out but they won’t really be completely true to what you want. If you are not familiar with the general sounds a low pass filter (LPF) can make then some of these demos may help, however.
Suffice it to say…if you like the sound of a LPF then the MF is a great choice.

BTW, what are your thoughts on the MF-102? I was looking at that as well, but thought the MF-101 might be more flexible given my gear (MK, MPC, ESX-1…).
The MF-102 was my first MF (after talking to folks here just like you are doing now.) GregAE (the guy who wrote some great documentation on the RM and probably some other MF’s) guided me to that as my first. When I first got it I was blown away but then I started to think to myself “How is this musical?” It took awhile but I finally realized that (for me) subtle was key…it’s not about cranking every knob all the way 'round but instead adding just enough color to make the next effect have something nice to work with, etc. I’m happy I have the RM now that I’ve learned how to control it a bit.
The MF-107 is great too because it has the envelope CV out - which I hadn’t thought much about until recently and making those latest demos for the other forum user who wanted to hear it. That works out nice because I can input that into the Frostwave Resonator (H/LPF) and get some nice (once again subtle - or not so) effects.
To be honest…I don’t think you can go wrong with any of the MF’s. Sometimes it’s hard to see all the capabilities but talking to people here and reading GregAE’s docs really helps to stretch you out a bit.
I just got back from trying out the MF-101 and MF-102. I now find myself leaning toward the 102 because it’s such a dramatic effect. I decided to take a day or two to think it over before jumping in.
The good news is that the guy at the shop told me he’d throw in an expression pedal because they had a used one in the back that he didn’t think he could sell.
Good man. I often wait days or weeks before committing a purchase as I like to buy the right thing the first time without regret. Read reviews, ask questions, try 'em out, give every purchase in life a long, hard look. In many ways, I tend to OVERBUY the feature-set like with a computer buy. That way, I can grow into the functionality etc & it somewhat wards off obsolesence & extends useful life. For instance, I’m buying a new Dell & am considering between two graphics cards, the XtremeMusic or XtremeGamer. The only real difference is the XMusic has one more 1/8" output for external I/O. Even though I’ll probably not ever need it, I’ll be safe in choosing it.
More specifically, I’m glad I got the 102 over the 101. Hell, my LP has a low-pass in it.. heh
The 102 definitely sounds more dramatic…it can be subtle as well which is how I like to use it…just to add a little clangorous high end to a solo sound, for example.
As has been alluded to here already - eventually you will have more than one MF anyway - so buy the one that “does it” for you right now. I think the 102 is a great choice for a first MF - it was mine
Does anyone have any non-guitar MF-102 clips I can hear? I really like the digital piano one on the Moog site, but I’d like to hear more of this bad boy in action.

The solo that you hear is a Voyager patch using the RM and other effects. The patch was not near as gritty without it. You can hear the high frequencies/harmonics dominating especially when the filter opens up with keyboard velocity. As I’ve said before, I like using the RM to add a little grit to a sound without making it too inharmonic sounding.
In fact, you can hear a much longer sample of the same tune (the first 2 minutes) at http://cdbaby.com/cd/blipfool but it’s much lower quality. The full solo starts after the head and the CD Baby version has the ENTIRE solo…so that might be a better place to listen.

BTW, I think you had a drum machine on your FreqBox demos. Have you ever tried running it through the 102 using just the drive to give it more crunch. This is something I’ve been wondering about.
Although I can’t remember 100% I want to say from listening to it that the RX11 sample starts dry then when the FB kicks in it just has some drive on it before I started turning other knobs. I tend to leave the drive at about 50% many times.
