Hi,
Ive got a Moog Voyager Keyboard, and seriously considering buying the Oberheim SEM pro as an expander…Can anyone tell me exactly how the two can be connected to sync up ? Are there any potential complications when linking them ?
And also any advice re-the possibilites of connectivity…
Have any slutz gone ahead and bought both these units ? Good results ??? What is to be gained by linking the pair ?
You shouhld be able to connect them thru Midi, but if you want to use CV, youll need the vx351.
Have a look here (below). I’ve corresponded with this bloke as well and he has nothing but great things to say about it (via CV). He has an Old School, like I do. But I’ve used a StudioLogics midi controller with my SEM (Mine is the midi version). Works great and an absolutely HUGE sound. One of the nice things about the Midi version is that the Midi->CV interface has two external CV outs + a gate. One is for Pitch and the other can be bound to any Midi CC or mod wheel, etc. I’ve used it to add a 3rd OSC (via FreqBox). (Midi kbd → SEM → FreqBox… then take FreqBox OSC out via 1/4" back into SEM’s input #2 and process via same Filter and ENV settings).
If you do decide on the patch version (the one with all of the 1/8th" jacks on the left side), you need to keep in mind that you may need a VX-351 if you want to drive it via CV (the Old School has CV OUT and Gate OUT on the back panel of the synth; the standard Voyager does not).
And if you are handy, you can wire up the SEM’s connectors to external 1/4" patches as they are clearly labeled and use standard header pin .100 connectors.
