. . . well, at least for me. Just saw Radiohead this week and they rolled out the Moog Voyager for some beefy leads and melodies. It seemed to outshine every other instrument on stage, particularly on the song Myxomatosis (sooo ffffaaattt).
Anyway, if you’re going to see them this tour, you’re in for a real treat. If not, perhaps you should check it out
That bass line on Myxomatosis is one of my favourites - and I love the Numanesque Polymoog-type sound that comes in at the end of the studio version. Hail to the Thief is my favourite Radiohead album.
I have seen them a couple of times (once I was lucky enough to be working at a festival and got to watch them soundcheck) but I’m not a fan of huge venues, which is all they play these days.
Oh, cool – I’m seeing them tomorrow so I’ll be on the lookout. I’ve always wondered if that Myxomatosis part was played on a Moog. I just got a Voyager last week and actually was fiddling with it trying to get that sound – any pointers on how to do so?
I just got a Radiohead ticket last week (for their NZ show, all the way in November) and I can’t wait! I’m glad they’re using the Moog well - I’ll keep an eye/ear out for it!
On that note, I saw Incubus live recently and Kilmore’s use of the Voyager (lit up in Jade - looked super cool) was a highlight for me - although I’m obviously on the Moog Forums so there ya go!
I saw a SNL RadioHead appearance laterly: Moog Voyager indeed as well as Prophet 08. Got me a bit drooling on the P08… but I manged it… I think…
About Incubus, I’ve not followed them since long (like just after SCIENCE… see) but I remember the old Moog website featuring Kilmores interview. He was speaking about the Foogers and the MP-201. Oh wait, maybe you can find it around the MP product page…
Yep, they were also using the P08 . . . mainly for pads, but you’re right, it sounded very nice too.
On an even happier note, I finally ordered a Voyager yesterday (slightly used PE), I’m so excited, I don’t know what to do with myself for the next few days So joe_moog, I’ll let you know if I figure it out when my Voyager arrives.
Dave. I’m sure you’re in for a treat when they get to you in November, they’ll have had plenty of time by then to perfect their stage show. Also, I’m a little jealous that you live in NZ I spent 6 months on the north island back in 04/05, most beautiful place I’ve ever seen. Still saving up to go back one day and explore the south island. I love your people and your culture, such a progressive, laid-back country. Enjoy it. What part of Aotearoa do you live in?
Yea I’ve read that! I looked out for the Fooger setup but I couldn’t see anything, he’s sort of up high (behind turntables etc.) at the back of the stage so it’s possible he had it up there somewhere, but maybe not in the latest tour.
I bet you’re excited about the Voyager! I’m currently tossing up between getting a Voyager or starting a Buchla 200e modular system, which I’d build up very slowly. I’m kind of leaning towards the Buchla as it’s radically different from my current Moog setup (Phatty Poly Chain) - but either way I’ll definately end up with a Minitaur at some stage!
I live in the captial city (Wellington) just by where the Inter-island ferrys leave for the South Island. The North Island can be quite picturesque, but I’d highly recommend exploring the South Island! I’ve been down there a few times and it’s generally alot more rugged and rural than the North Island. The Southern Alps are down there which is a big mountain range with glaciers and skiing etc. aswell as beautiful lake towns such as Queenstown and Wanaka and sea inlets such as Milford Sound and the Marlborough Sounds. At this point the biggest city down there (Christchurch) has it’s CBD closed due to the recent earthquakes and rebuilding (they still get lots of little aftershocks), but as time goes on the city should return to normal (I think they’re re-opening the CBD some time soon).. I assume you don’t come here for the cities anyway! lol
Seeing as I live in Wellington, for the Radiohead gig me and my friends are going to roadtrip the North Island up to Auckland (where the gig is), so it should be heaps of fun!
wow, a Buchla . . . very cool. A Buchla modular setup is definitely in my distant future, but first I have to figure out how to make a shitload of money.
Indeed I’ve heard (and seen in pix) that the south island is even more breathtaking than the north, and next time I go I’m just going to fly into Dunedin or Christchurch and start the trip at the bottom. In my defense, the first time I went I was only 22, and I just showed up with a backpack and an open-ended ticket, no plans, no prospects. I bought an old Honda Civic for $600 and spent some time WWOOFing, but mostly camping, hiking, and surfing. I sort of just drifted around to the whims of the great magnet, which made for an amazing adventure filled with memorable experiences, but it did prevent me from experiencing certain events that a little planning could have helped with, like making it to the south island before my visa ran out, perhaps I drank too many Tui’s and smoked too many tinnies (sp?) I spent 9 weeks in Raglan, good people, good nugs, and good waves never stopped, so it was hard to leave
I actually spent a week in Wellington waiting on a package. Met some interesting young Maori kids that sold me some weed and then came to hang out with me at my hostel on a couple of rainy days. Oddly enough, the only one’s name I remember is Tuti (sp?) –rhymes with footy, of course, I’m pretty sure that was his nickname.
Regarding the Buchla, I’ll be starting small with 4 Modules (like System #1 on their website) but in a large cabinet for expansion over time.
I’m glad to hear you had a good time here! I think there are benefits to having a non-planned trip (more freedom) and planned trip (more tourist activities etc.).
I’ve been to most parts of New Zealand, but I haven’t actually been to Raglan. It definately seems like the place to be if you’re into surfing though!
