Moog Source Gone Batsh*t Crazy

Well maybe that’s an overstatement. At the moment it doesn’t really do much at all. It was playing fine, and then started making all sorts of horrible noises, and reset to patch 1. It then played normally for awhile before doing this again. Finally, it flipped out again, and the display now reads “:1” like it’s in hold. It now just generates a crackling noise, and every key, button, wheel, etc… is unresponsive. I cracked it open and cleaned off the digital regulator leads (U3) on the power supply board as indicated for the “crazy source” issue. When I powered up again, it came out of hold for about 30 seconds, but the output was horribly distorted. It then reverted to the same “:1” behavior. I found an archived post from 2005 describing this exact problem. Anyone else experienced this (and found a fix, hopefully)? Any suggestions?

That’s the “crazy Source” problem alright

Well, if it is, the recommended fix isn’t doing the trick. I’ve deoxidized the 7805C leads, and nothing’s improved. Only one crazy source report I’ve found describes the exact symptoms of mine. That was on this board in 2005 and no one replied to the post. Anyone have any ideas of either other things it might be, or other parts that might create “crazy source” type issues? The battery tests fine, but I guess replacing it is worth a shot. Would really appreciate some constructive advice. Thanks.

Update I took out the other 7805C and deoxidized it as well. Then I switched the two, and everything is back to normal. Not sure if it was changing them, or cleaning the second one that got things rolling, but I’m just going to replace them both, and be happy that it’s working again.

Welp… so much for that. It’s back on the fritz. Am I correct in thinking that I should buy two new 7805C ICs, take out the sockets and solder the 7805s directly to the power board? Thanks
