First let me tell you I dont own any Moog synths and is a newbie on synthesis stuff..I just have a general question about the Moog Rogue..its a particular simple preset/ sound from that synth I am looking for. It is in this vid at app. 06:15: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1bw30_strangers-dvd-2005-documentary-part_music. What is the name on that preset and how can I emulate it?
Appreciate if someone will answer:)
It’s called the Rogue has no presets. Nor can it store patches. It’s an old-school synth, which means you actually have to figure out a particular sound by knowing what the different sections (Oscs, Filter, ADSR, etc.) of the Rogue do.
Thanks for answering:) So basically, it is possible to emulate that sound exactly with any synth? If so, do you have any recommendations on how to start..
The only hardware synth I have is an Emu vintage keys module..it is not a real synth, just samples of vintage instruments, can do some limited modulation so I cant get close with that. I have Logic pro 9 though, I suppose I can use some of Logics own synth plugins?
That would be preset: “flip some switches, turn some knobs and push some sliders. It’s in there somewhere”. That and a heavy mix of delay helps.
On another note, it’s bold to make a statement like “I don’t think anyone has really ever done anything really exciting with piano sounds”. Maybe in that room he’s in. Guess he missed these guys. Sorry, it kinda bugs me when artists talk like that. I’m done

Maybe, but this is on a higher level than anyone has been with piano sounds before Dont mess with him, he is a genius If you listen to this album http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2AMUmt2eCM you will understand
You’ll never get it exactly with any synth. The Rogue is a unique instrument. Even though the Little Phatty has similar parts, such as filter, two oscs, ADSR, etc. the Rogue’s filter was somewhat different. In fact, no two Moogs sound exactly alike; even with 24 dB filters, each filter on each synth has it’s own character. Plus, the osc’s on the Rogue were really raw. Plugins will get you close, but you’ll never get THAT sound from anything but a Rogue, sad to say.
The Rogue, a keyboard version of the Taurus II has a very distinctive sound and a quite different contour section compared to your regular ASDR EGR’s. As to whether this preset can be emulated on anything else to a close degree, that remains to be seen. Here’s a quick attempt to recreate this sound, not too bad I would think, but without the large amount of reverb in that room, FXed or not. Consider that a starting point and good luck!
You want me to buy one..well I seriously consider it. Dont know how easy it will be to find one though. The question is if it is clever of me buying this just for one sound? I understand this is not the most difficult synth to learn, is it a good way to start for a beginner?
This is a PERFECT synth for a beginner. It was my first. I learned a lot from it. But don’t let it’s simplicity fool you. There are tones that it can produce that you cannot get out of a Phatty or a Voyager for that matter. Once you get one and realize how versatile it really is, you will never look back.
And they can be had on eBay. I see them all of the time. They can range anywhere from $500 - $800. Of course, once you start getting to the $800 range, it would probably be more beneficial to get a Slim Phatty.
IMO, I wish I had started on one. The old stuff, and really any synth with knob per function, is a lot easier to learn than something like the Little Phatty.
Nope, not really, I am just showing you the settings on my Rogue so you can approximate them on whatever you have, be that hardware or software.
If do recommend that you buy a hardware synth though at one point. If you want a very good sounding synth at a bargain price though, and with capabilities you will probably never outgrow, look into an Akai Miniak. A star in the performance department. Almost a thousands sounds , plus patterns, rythms and sequences. However, for making your own sounds, be prepared for endless knob tweaking sessions watching a two line LDC panel.
Thanks for the info, I have been thinking now.. it is a rogue out on ebay for bidding start at 600 USD apparantly in excellent condition..I sent the seller a message and he will sell it to me only if I use BIN at 750 USD and send to Norway for 40 USD… is this a good deal? I can afford it, its not that, but.. I like how this synth sounds but I am a bit confused
prices sure have gone up in the past 10 years! I remember shelling out 600 for a Prodigy in '99 and thinking I was splurging on paying top dollar, then sold it 2 years later for 700!
Got mine at the best possible price…Free! Keyboard player for a wedding band I was doing sound for had no idea what he had. Just up and gave it to me. Sucker!
With that said, $750 w/$40 shipping seems a bit steep. See if he is willing to sell it @ $750 and throw the shipping costs in for free…oh, nevermind. Looks like you or someone already nabbed it.
I just want to say I didnt got that Rogue listed on ebay, but I will keep looking for one..Anyway, thanks to everyone who replied to the topic, thanks for the information and hospitality shown me on this forum:)
