Interesting I disabled CV Sustain Input on MoogOne and this has slightly helped the problem. It was unusable before and would hang like after 3 bars then jitter. Running some tests for like 30 mins to see if it will hang.
Interesting fix. Mine has been working now that I disabled CV sustain. Still hangs once in a while. I’ve had this issue since day one with the synth and always just played it in and recorded audio and skipped all midi programming etc. was such a bummer for an 8k synth. I do hope they still address this.
I was happy to an update to firmware as I thought all was lost forever. So hopefully they keep fixing things
I’m sorry to hear you are (also) experiencing such issues with a “flagship” instrument. It’s ridiculous that Moog released the One with all the bugs it originally had, and they are (or inMusic purportedly is) still addressing this 8 years later.
DISCLAIMER: I am not a circuit level tech or a software engineer! On the other hand, I’ve owned Moog gear (including my vintage modular) since the 70s. The following is just my opinion, based on my experience with a Moog One, and offered as such. YMMV!
Based on the frequency (time, not pitch) of your hanging notes issues, it sounds to me like your One may have BOTH a firmware and hardware issue.
My problems with midi notes hanging on the Moog One was pretty well documented on here and GS. Here’s the short(ish) version.
I bought one of the very first units available in 2018 and it was basically a large paperweight for years. It had all of the early issues (tuning, noise floor and hanging notes just to list a few) that were - for the most part - addressed in the first few firmware updates.
However, mine would hang notes every few seconds when playing from my keyboard or any of my sequencers (Cubase, Ableton and directly from my Cirklon.) I had numerous contacts with Moog employees, including higher level people, who assured me that a) it wasn’t a hardware issue, and b) it would be fixed in the next firmware update. But it wasn’t.
After some pretty serious diagnostics and home made videos were shared with them, mine went back to Moog the first time in 2021. They replaced the keybed and sent it back saying that had fixed the problem. It didn’t! TBH, I was so angry that I almost sold it, but felt bad about unloading it on someone else. I also actually considered filing a class action lawsuit, but was far too busy and assumed that doing so would put a company I had really liked out of business.
I continued to communicate with them for a few more years and repeated firmware “coming” claims proved unreliable. I was told by a management level employee that firmware “might” be coming to fix it - in 2-3 years. So like everyone else, I just waited… and waited…
In early 2024, I had a chat with a tech who was affiliated with (but not an employee of) Moog. After I disclosed my disappointment with the unit and the lack of service, and explained what was happening in great detail, he gave me a process to try which I will describe below. After I conducted the test, he told me it was very likely a hardware issue with the voice assignment controller. I then contacted Moog again, sent them more videos and confronted them with the new info. They had me send mine back for a second time and ended up replacing it with a brand new One. I do want to acknowledge that they replaced a 6 year old instrument - 5 years after the warranty expired - including all shipping costs - which is rather remarkable these days. But it never should have gotten to that!
The new one is far (FAR!) better, and only hangs once or twice a day now, but it does still does it occasionally.
Here is what I suggest you do to see if yours is ALSO a hardware issue. There is a display that shows which voices are playing at the bottom of the large LCD. The 8v has 8 bars and the 16v has 16. On my 16v, they are in 4 blocks of 4 voices. Play a sequence into the unit, or just lay your forearm on the keybed to trigger all the voices until one (or more) hangs. The display will show you which voice is hanging. Listen for the note that is being played by that voice. If - for example - it’s C3, then play the C3 key on the keyboard. (On mine, it seemed the notes were pretty random, so it wasn’t a bad keybed causing the problem.) If its just a firmware issue, that note will play, it will show you what voice is playing it, and it will shut off when you release the key. On the other hand, if when you press that key, another voice comes on to play that note, and hangs; and each time you press that key another voice comes on, plays that note and hangs, until all the voices are playing the same hanging note, it’s a hardware problem that (I don’t believe) firmware will (or can?) fix. That’s what my first One did.
Again, I’m NOT a technician or a software engineer. But when I figured this out and confronted Moog, they replaced mine and it is WAY better than the old one was.
