Modulation question

Ok, I’m feeling pretty stupid asking this, but I just can’t get it thru my pea brain. If the Modulation Section is set like so:
Source: Filt. Env.
Destination: Filter
Assuming Mod wheel up and Amount non-zero, what does this do? In other words, how is it different from what the Filter EG always does?

I assume “Filt. Env.” means Filter ADSR, the voltage which modulates the Filter cutoff. With the Mod wheel OFF, the Filter ADSR already modulates Filter Cutoff, so seeing it in the Modulation buss doesn’t make sense to me.

Can someone put me straight?

I can think of 3 reasons:

  1. So you can vary the Filter Envelope Amount for more expressive playing using the mod wheel (it’s more convenient then having to turn the Filter Env Amnt knob while playing)

  2. With Filter ADSR set to A=0 D=0/Max S=Max R=0 you can actually have control over the filter cutoff from the Modwheel something that can’t be set-up in any other way.

  3. It’s just there because that’s the nature of the modulation matrix, there are sources to choose from and there are destinations. Why is it possible to set up to this routing? For the same reason that a dog licks his balls… BECAUSE HE CAN

Have fun

Good answers. Now I see. Thanks, PHC.

#3 sounds reasonable!
