minimoog vocoder

ne1 know if you can use the external in to create a vocoder sound, or would it require multiple envelopes on separate bands?

Since the external input simply connects to the internal mixer, and then passes it thru the filter and VCA, I don’t think it’s possible at all.

As you may know, a vocoder consists of several filters to isolate each band in the frequency spectrum of the modulator input signal and several amplitude followers and VCAs to modulate a carrier (synth sound).

What you can try however, is a voice effect similar to the one used by Ozzy Osborne in the opening of the Black Sabbath song Iron Man (which was a tremolo at high speed). Simply use OSC 3 as a modulator (around 30-60 hertz frequency) for the filter cutoff, and only pass the external input thru the filter with the cutoff knob at around noon. Mod wheel to the max. By keeping OSC 3 Control to “on” you can play (try) different notes on the keyboard to change the effect…

ahhh yeah, that was a cool effect on iron man, many thanks for the tip!!

You’re welcome.

You can even achieve some sort of “robot voice”, similar to early vocoders, by speaking at the same frequency of the modulator (OSC 3), or by speaking in intervals of that frequency (third, fifth, seventh) and hear the interesting results…

In an old film called “Colossus”, about a computer that would take over the world, they used an off-camera actor’s voice passed thru a very simple vocoder (4 bands) for its, supposedly, synthesized speech. It sounded much like if you played a middle C at 32’ octave for OSC 3 and speak on that same tone. Just say “Good evening, doctor Forbin.” in a monotone voice… lol

Have fun.

NICE!!!

looking forward to seeing what I can pull off. Might try to throw the midi murf in there 2
