MidiMurf as a Controller?

Is it possible for me to map say a filter cutoff in a softsynth to a midimurf knob?

If i want the Subphatty to do it, i just right click in my plug in and wiggle a knob…super easy…

The filter faders and knobs are so nice feeling, I’d love to be able to use them as a general controller with Reaktor and Kontakt.

Thanks,
Richard

There is no midi out so you can’t use a learn function, but assigning the CC manually works like a charm. No Filter cutoff knob of the murf though. It is a fixed resonant filter bank (though the band frequencies can be modulated by the LFO).

Thanks for the response.
Though I think there is some confusion and I apologize for not explaining properly.

When you say assigning the cc manually, you mean only with the midimurf? and not using it as a controller?

Im confused to what works like a charm?

I understand that there is no filter cutoff on the midimurf.
I meant using the midimurf knobs to control the cutoff of a vst.

if it’s not possible, I’m wondering if i could mod the pedal with a midi out so I could use it for CCs with non-moog vsts. It would seriously make a very convenient little controller.

Hi Richard, and welcome

The MIDI Murf only has a MDI in port. You won’t be able to control anything with it, unless you use the CV outputs, no MIDI though.
About adding a MIDI out -I’m not aware of your electronic or software developmenet skills- it’s not just about adding a MIDI DIN plug. You’d ahve to modifiy the firmware. To me this does not belong to the DIY realm.

All the best!

Thanks stiiiiiiive

Good to know. And yes definitely far out of my realm.

Any hints on finding someone who provides a service that could do the hardware/firmware mod?

Thanks guys !
Richard

The MidiMurf will not act as a controller in the way your are wanting it to. There are many ‘control surfaces’ currently being manufactured which address your needs. And at a price point that is easy to handle. The amount of work to make the Murf do what you want is in the range of 3 or 4 figures. Which in my book makes it mos def out of the question.

.

4 figures is out of the range I would like - I was hoping more for under 300 - wishful thinking…
maybe there are parts i could do and parts i could outsource (like the code) and still be in the 3 figure range…

Minitaur will do it for 500, kinda expensive for a controller knob but you get a free 2 VCO synth with it..

Thanks guys!

Minataur is great for knobs and a beautiful synth, but i am looking for faders. originally, my plan was to build a livid controller using the livid elements. I was planning on 3 of the 8 fader modules and 1 combo module (knobs, faders and buttons) into a custom case.

But whenever I mess with my midimurf, i tweak those filter faders, and I am filled with pure joy with every touch. They are so smooth and I love the tiny form factor.

I am in the middle of emails with the Livid guys trying to see if i can whip something up with 4 sets of similar faders to the midimurf… I’m hoping they know where to find similar faders, though I’ve never seen anything like them before…

Maybe you should check out the new novation mini controllers

Hi Colorform.
Thanks for the tip, but I’m specifically interested in faders. that controller has knobs and pads.

Oh gotcha

Knobs, slides, and buttons?

I’m thinking this  https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/15360583/controller%20idea.png

Oooh very nice!

You may want to check out the Palette Gear modular controller.

stiiiive - the pallate gear looks awesome… I hadn’t seen it! great find!

still not enough faders for this particular project, but could definitely be useful for me in other ways!

this company has all kinds of moog knobs and sliders, including the ones in the midimurf - there are also the liberation slider caps which are the same but in different colors…

these combined with a livid brain are going to make my idea a reality

i may even go further and make it bigger with a row of 16 knobs as well and some switches too - all depends on how much it will all be… but I love that it is actually feasible! Iw as going to drop 650-1100 on the livid controller - might as well make it exactly as I want
