MIDI Thru?

Hi,
I am having a problem that I do not understand.

If I connect my LP’s MIDI to my MIDI interface and send both Ports In and Out,
everything works fine.

But because the LP does not have a Thru port, I bought a MIDI Thru box to connect to.

What I want to do is send my MIDI out as usual to my Interface and instruments plus
using the Thru box, send the split output to my Octopus, which has a MIDI In port
to allow keyboard entry and so on.

But the Thru does not work at all. When I connect the Thru box to the output of the
LP. I get no MIDI message to either my Interface or the Octopus.

When I connect the Thru box in a similar chain from another instrument, it works
fine, but that instrument is not my Controller (LP is my Controller).

I tried using the MIDI Merge feature in the LP but the On/Off settings do not help.
I have Local Control set to OFF on the LP as I use it as a Controller and this
mode works fine without the Thru box in the chain.

What is going on here, that I do not understand? Can anyone tell me if they use
some sort of Thru box with my LP?

Note, my setup is complex with 3 AMT interfaces, Logic and an Octopus involved,
so I am pretty up on the setup but this is a new issue for me.

Edit: The MIDI Thru seems to work on outputs coming from my MIDI interface,
but not from the LP.

Does this mean that my Thru box is not up to the job? I used to have a Boss
one many years ago, that took 9v power and this one I have is a “passive” box
supposedly drawing power over MIDI. Perhaps the LP doesn’t offer power on the MIDI
buss, the same way as other instruments? Please let me know, as I can possibly get a powered interface rather quickly but otherwise I will have to wait again and I want to
sort this out!

Are you sure that the MIDI out channel on the Little Phatty is properly set to control the Octopus?

Yes. The Octopus doesn’t care what channel the LP is on as it receives on all channels
(Omni On) but maps internally to the correct track.

The problem is that it seems that the LP does indeed not have MIDI buss power
or it puts out far less than the 5v required to drive the passive Thru box and so
I need to get a powered Thru box like a Roland MM4 or similar.
